  • 3. FR. ADRIAN’S CORNER January 2014 got off to a great start with the elec on of new people to leadership in the Small Chris an Community at the parish. They are Claudia Labarge, Elisa Ramirez and Mark Moniz. Claudia and Elisa are the Coordinator and CoCoordinator respec vely, while Mark is the new Secretary. The SCC Working Group has had its first mee ng and it was conducted in both languages with representa ves from the Hispanic and English-speaking SCC’s a ending. The Working Group will con nue to process the material gathered at the Conven on before Christmas 2013 and present its findings to the whole community by late February. Congratulaons to Claudia, Elisa and Mark and many thanks to the Working Group! The Franciscan Pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi is gathering momentum with a lively interest coming from people in the parish and from outside. Brochures are now available from the Parish Office. If you are interested in joining us you may call Wendy Brophy at 858-756-4174 x1702 or email at for further details. The pilgrimage will include an audience with the Holy Father in St. Peter’s Square, visits to the catacombs and to the Sis ne Chapel as well as a tour of Rome’s most famous sights. We will also be at Greccio where St. Francis celebrated Christmas with a live crib; visit Assisi and all the places associated with Francis and Clare; the shrine of La Verna, high in the Apennines where St. Francis received the s gmata, as well as the beau ful ci es of Florence and Siena. Wendy tells me that the places for our October 2014 Pilgrimage are filling up fast so get your deposit in soon if you wish to be included. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel at the Serra Center is almost finished. The chapel will be open at weekends and the Blessed Sacrament will be reserved there between Masses. Thank you to Lupe Rios, Linda Causee and Jenny Flynn for the good work they have done and to all our benefactors who have donated money for paint and materials to decorate the chapel. If you would like to make a financial dona on towards the furnishing and decora on of the chapel please contact Lupe Rios, Director of Worship at the parish. I am pleased to announce the forma on of a Liturgical Council for the parish. The members of the council are Lupe Rios, Director of Worship, Fr. Luis, Associate Pastor, David Coe, Laura Woodward-Gibson, Jenny Flynn, Tavale Tavale and Fr. Adrian (myself). Our brief is to plan the liturgical life of the parish and advise the Director of Worship. I will be in the Chair while Laura Woodward-Gibson will act as Secretary. Thank you one and all for dona ng your valuable me and your considerable talents in the service of the people of the parish. The Liturgical Council will meet monthly for an hour and a half. The Altar Server Ministry has go en a boost with the arrival of 20 new servers, many from the Parish School. We welcome them and thank them and their parents for their willingness to do this ministry at the altar. Tala Paulo and Gilberto Mar nez are the Leaders of this ministry and may be contacted through the parish office. Ed Paz has agreed to be our scheduler – no be er man!!... and we are delighted to have his skills in this tricky area. Thanks also to Laura Chun who keeps an eye on things from the background and is always available for advice when needed. Please note that the Men’s Prayer and Discernment Group has a new date, namely, the first Thursday of the month. Apologies for the missed Wednesdays and for this tardy beginning to 2014 – the Franciscan School had open lectures on the same night and the Friars changed their Community Night from Thursday to Wednesday making it hard for Br. Christopher and I to be available. Wednesday also clashed with the RCIA Program at the parish and kept some from a ending. With a new day on the calendar we look forward to welcoming everyone again on February 6 at 7:00 pm in the Francis Room at the Old Mission. Just bring yourself!! Reflec ng recently on the words of St. John in scripture: “He who abides in love abides in God and God in him,” Pope Francis said that “Chris an love always possesses one quality: concreteness. Chris an love is concrete. Jesus himself, when he speaks of love, tells us concrete things: feed the hungry, visit the sick.” They are all “concrete things” for indeed “love is concrete.” “Love is found more in deeds than words. Jesus himself said: it is not those who call me ‘Lord, Lord’, who talk much, who shall enter the Kingdom of heaven; but those who do the will of God.” The invita on set before us, then, is to be “concrete” by doing “the deeds of God.” There is a ques on we must each ask ourselves: “If I abide in Jesus, if I abide in the Lord, if I abide in love, what do I do for God — not what do I think or what do I say — and what do I do for others?” Therefore, he said “the first criterion is to love with deeds, not with words.” “The wind carries away our words: today they are here and tomorrow they are gone.” The “second criteria for concreteness,” the Pope con nued, is that “in love it is more important to give than to receive.” The person “who loves, gives, gives things, gives life, gives himself to God and to others.” Instead, the person “who does not love and who is selfish always seeks to receive. He/she seeks always to have things, to have the advantage.” Hence the spiritual counsel “to abide with an open heart, and not like the disciples whose hearts were closed” and who therefore did not understand. Pope Francis repeated: “it is a ma er of abiding in God” and of “God abiding in us. It is a ma er of abiding in love.” Have a wonderful week ahead. - Fr. Adrian. • 8.
