  1. 1. What makes a Leader?? Leadership is about Emotions! Managing your emotions – is what we call as Emotional Intelligence (EI) Let your emotions work for you, not against you

Have you come across these situations??… Relationship Problems – when you fail to communicate what you need; when you lose the confidence of your team members; when you are acknowledged as – “never approachable” Rage in the Workplace – Outburst of emotions Poor decision making capability – Pre-occupied with frustrated thoughts Failure to advance in career – losing track of the actual purpose! This happens when we neglect to manage our emotions… High rate of attrition in your team (healthy or bad!) – People start leaving you…not the job. Think! They start moving away from your vision Lack of complete delegation – Lack of trust leading to micromanaging, when it actually can be avoided

Components of Emotional Intelligence Effectiveness in leading change Persuasiveness Expertise in building & leading teams Proficiency in managing relationships and building networks An ability to find common group & build rapport Social Skills Expertise in building and retaining talent Cross-cultural sensitivity Service to clients and customers The ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people Skill in treating people according to their emotional reactions Empathy Strong drive to achieve Optimism, even in the face of failure Organizational commitment A passion to work for reasons that go beyond money or status The propensity to suspend judgement –to think before acting Motivation Trustworthiness & integrity Comfort with ambiguity Openness to change The ability to control or redirect disruptive impulses and moods. How then can one improve emotional intelligence? <ul><li>Pay attention to self and other’s body language </li></ul><ul><li>Listen more; speak less- develops empathy </li></ul><ul><li>Get curious, not furious- Watch what you say especially when frustrated or annoyed. Reframe negative emotions into curiosity - &quot; ... this makes absolutely no sense to me&quot; can be replaced with, &quot;Do you see something in this that I must be missing” </li></ul><ul><li>Elicit pride in others – Reason for working together </li></ul><ul><li>Remember that emotions are contagious - A dominant person's emotions (negative or positive) always influences others. Leaders should be careful to show only those emotions, which they want to see in others </li></ul>
  6. 6. Checklist – for building an Emotionally intelligent team Do they take the extra effort required to get the work done? Does each member often get feedback? How is work-life balance encouraged? How long does it take a new entrant to be productive? Any serious issues within the team, you are not aware of What is the tone of our communication with your team? Do they contribute above and beyond the expected? How Is EI reinforced, encouraged or rewarded? What are you doing to help your team advance? Does the team learn from mistakes? Do they take efforts to refer people from outside? Do you know what motivates each member? What is the emotional tone set by your leadership (negative/positive) Is the team taking measures to correct themselves? Team Solicits honest feedback? Would they recommend you as a good boss to work for? Do they know how their job fits into the big picture? What mechanisms are in place to resolve team conflict? Is the team aware of it’s shortcomings? Importance of achieving the purpose? Do team members feel valued and listened to? Does the team have a sense of purpose? Does bullying occur?
