Stress and yoga dr. shriniwas kashalikarDocument Transcript
One of the basic principles in human life is that we sense
the environment and respond to it. There is a sequence of
stimulation, integration and motor activity; cognition,
affect and conation; or perception feelings and reaction;
stimulus, homeostatic change and response; and so on!
When this sequence is disturbed; in quality and quantity;
it is called STRESS. In other words; STRESS is lack of
YOGA in life!
YOGA is integration of; different hierarchical
components of brain, left and right parietal (cerebral)
cortexes i.e. right and left brain; metabolic, endocrine,
autonomic and central nervous activities; and global
perspective, thoughts, emotions, instincts and actions;
and the experience and expression of the union (YOGA)
of individual and universal consciousness; into concerted
manifestations in every sphere of life. YOGA and its core
(NAMASMARAN); constitute the connection (YOGA)
that wields twenty four hours and every moment in our
life; with no “room” for deception, deceit, delirium,
delusion, despondency, despair, defeat, degeneration,
degradation, destruction and devastation!
YOGA is ecstatic union! The union however is
increasingly difficult at physical, instinctual, emotional,
intellectual and spiritual levels. Interestingly; it is also
increasingly more complete at every level of these! The
highest kind of union is at spiritual level and encompasses
all levels, and is seen amongst the true guru and shishya
i.e. the true master and disciple. Hence all differences,
disputes and contradictions such as theism and atheism;
dissolve in spiritual union within oneself and between
guru and a shishya.
Yoga is a program of individual and global (inseparably
connected YOGA); welfare; inseparably integrated
• The perspective of global unity and harmony,
• The thoughts and policies of global welfare,
• Motivation and concern for global welfare,
• Healthy and mutually gratifying and satisfying
• Sharing of resources on a “just” basis at personal
and global levels!
Lack of YOGA is disintegration of our personality; that
reflects in personal and social life! Thus even if a person
is intelligent in terms of memory, analytical thinking, and
innovation; and so on, i.e. (left cerebral development) he/
she can be vicious, perverted and antisocial if not
balanced and integrated with right brain. Conversely
mere development of right cerebral cortex is not
adequate; because, well meaning visions, motivations and
subtle artistic and poetic feelings are not buttressed and
supported by logical and accurate solutions to day to day
problems. There is inability to realize the unity of
universe and inability to realize unity of pathies in
medicine and inability to understand the
interrelationship, interactivity, interdependence and
complementarity in various fields of transactions such as
agriculture, science, technology, industry, trade, culture,
and politics! This inability leads to sectarian prejudices
and fanatic bigotry. This leads to prevalence of injustice,
hatred, exploitation and crimes in different forms.
Hence YOGA should never be reduced (in our own
best interest); to some mediocre techniques; hyped and
sold; merely for some petty personal or mercenary
gains or gratification of ego! In fact; we need the
international and the national laws; and intellectual,
political, literary, artistic, informational and material
environment conducive to YOGA!
This era is especially unique because NAMASMARAN
(core of yoga) i.e. remembering the name of God usually
inspired by a Guru ensures this process and progress of
YOGA; i.e. being connected (YOGA); with the absolute,
objective or cosmic consciousness!
Let us try to practice NAMASMARAN (which is the core
of Total Stress Management) on priority basis; whether
we are completely convinced or not; without vacillations;
and verify this process of individual and global
blossoming; by being part of it; irrespective of what we
are; or what we think and feel; what we are!
The final stage of YOGA; however; constitutes the union
of all these three components (cognition, affect and
conation) of the sequence.
Thus a profoundly evolved YOGI would be seen as if
he is not doing any thing but in fact he is sensing
beyond all sensory capacities, he is feeling beyond all
subjective emotional depths and he is responding
beyond anything “apparent” in action!
He is free from slavery of the hormones and
neurotransmitters; and intellectual, emotional,
instinctual and physical vacillations due to ups and
downs of the hormones and the neurotransmitters.
This is truly a culmination of YOGA (union); where
impeccable and accurate perception, pinnacle of
individual satisfaction and infinitely exuberant
benevolence for the universe; unite; (as they begin from
and end in the same absolute consciousness); and
constitutes the final destiny of individual and universal
