There are more than 3,500protected areas in existenceworldwide. These areas includeparks, wildlife refuges and otherreserves. They cover a total ofnearly 2 million square miles (5million square km), or 3% of ourtotal land area.
Presently there are 38 known species ofmammals that are extinct. However, of themthere are some that are kept in captivity withscientists trying to save them from goingextinct. With global warming becoming amajor issue, 28,270 animal species ofmammals are now labeled as threatened
