2. Unlike decades ago when only ugly hair
systems and risky hair surgeries were the
viable options for men suffering from
pattern baldness, various products for
hair loss are abundant today. Because hair
loss is mostly triggered under the
influence of male hormones, fortunately
enough, alternative treatments for men
are not as limited as for women.
Rogaine and Avacor. Rogaine is a trade name of Minoxidil.
Minoxidil is approved by the Food and Drug Administration to
treat pattern hair loss. It works as a vasodilator which means it
enlarges the blood vessels for better circulation. Minoxidil is
either a topical or oral treatment. Avacor is a topical solution
which is applied on the scalp twice on a daily basis. (Avacor has
been facing charges of being a fraud product.)

3. Minoxidil is effective in providing acceptable hair regrowth.
When application stops, the hair loss resumes. Prolonged
usage of this drug could lead to inflamed or abnormal scalps.
It is contraindicated in pregnant and nursing women. Minoxidil
is good for people with Androgenetic Alopecia and Alopecia
Areata.
Propecia. Contained in Propecia is Finasteride, another FDA-
approved drug to treat hair loss for its anti-androgenetic
properties. Anti-androgenetic qualities present in Finasteride
obstruct all androgenic activity. Finasteride slows down the
progress of hair loss because it goes directly to the main
cause of balding, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) build-up.

4. Avodart. Avodart is also one of the products for hair loss that
use Dutasteride. Dutasteride works like Finasteride but it is
more effective in that it inhibits the two types of 5-alpha
reductase, the enzymes that catalyze testosterone into DHT.
Finasteride only blocks type 2 5-alpha reductase.
Dutasteride’s and Finasteride’s major side-effect is sexual
dysfunction.
ThymusSkin. The active ingredient in Thymuskin is a thymus
gland extract from a calf. Thymus is a lymphoid organ which is
necessary for a better body immunity. Unlike trade names that
bear Minoxidil and Finasteride, Thymuskin has no severe side-
effects. It is appropriate not only for men but also for women
and children.
Thymus extract treatment has showed 65% success rate in
restoring hair for cases of pattern hair loss while 85% in
alopecia areata.

5. Procerin. Saw Palmetto is the active ingredient present in the
Procerin. Saw palmetto is also a DHT inhibitor like Finasteride.
Indeed unlike before, products for hair loss are now
sophisticated and more effective—that is, through the various
active ingredients present—in helping people cope with the
problem.
