A need to know basis

  1. 1. A Need to Know Basis(We all need to know)by Samuel E. WardPastor, Covenant Baptist Church1
  2. 2. IntroductionA. Biblical Illiteracy Is a Problem1. In our general culture2. In our churches"Americans revere the Bible - but, by andlarge, they dont read it. And becausethey dont read it, they have become anation of biblical illiterates."- - George Gallup and Jim Castelli2
  3. 3. B. Biblical Illiteracy Is a Scandal(according to researcher Albert Mohler)1. Fewer than half of all adults can namethe four gospels.2. Many professing Christians cannotidentify more than two or three of thedisciples.3. Sixty percent of Americans cant nameeven five of the Ten Commandments.3
  4. 4. 4. Eighty-two percent of Americansbelieve "God helps those who helpthemselves" is a Bible verse.5. Twelve percent of adults believe thatJoan of Arc was Noahs wife.6. A survey of graduating high schoolseniors revealed that over 50 percentthought that Sodom and Gomorrahwere husband and wife.4
  5. 5. 7. A considerable number of respondentsto one poll indicated that the Sermonon the Mount was preached by BillyGraham.5
  6. 6. C. Israel has provided many examples inits history of the God’s judgment anddiscipline for their failure to teachGod’s ways to their children in spite ofGod’s many warnings, Deu 8:10-20;2 Kings 17:37-41.D. Do not think that God will not judgethe church (globally, locally, andindividual members) if it does not keepin its memory God’s Word and itspractice, Heb 12:5-6, 11.6
  7. 7. I. Ignorance of God’s WordHas Serious EffectsA. On Individuals1. People are destroyed as a result ofignoring God’s Word and therefore areunable to make wise and righteouschoices, Hos 4:1, 6.2. People are brought to spiritualstarvation because they have ignoredGod’s Word and no longer remember toturn it for help, Amos 8:11-13.7
  8. 8. 3. People are left without a compass forlife, Psa 119:105.4. People are without a clue on where tofind true joy or peace,Psa 119:111,165.8
  9. 9. B. On Churches1. There is a dearth in our churches oftrained teachers and those willing tobe trained. This ought not to be!(Heb 5:12-6:3, 7-8)9
  10. 10. 2. There is a widespread shallowness ofthe biblical view of contemporaryissues that is evidenced by how manyin the church have come to acceptsociety’s view of issues. All this isbecause Christians are so ignorantconcerning God’s Word they are notable to discern the biblical view,Isa 5:20.10
  11. 11. C. On Society1. Because of our ignorance of God’sWord, our standards of morality are“turned in – side out” so that good isevil and evil is good, Isa 5:20.a. We have those who claim to beChristians who slaughter the innocent(abortion).11
  12. 12. b. We have those who claim to beChristians but put the wicked on apedestal while denigrating andinsulting the righteous, Phil 3:18-20.c. We have those who claim to beChristians who participate in andapprove of the same perversions andwickedness as those whom God saysdeserve death, Rom 1:24-32.12
  13. 13. 2. Because of our toleration of theworld’s view of morality even withinthe church, it is no wonder that . . .a. Pornography and promiscuity exists inthe church at levels nearly equivalentto that in the general population. Someresearch groups call these statisticsinto question. However, consider:13
  14. 14. Consider. . .• 29% of born again adults in the U.S.feel it is morally acceptable to viewmovies with explicit sexual behavior.(The Barna Group)• 57% of pastors say that addiction topornography is the most sexuallydamaging issue to theircongregation.(Christians and SexLeadership Journal Survey, March2005)14
  15. 15. b. Children are deprived the kind ofparenting that is their God-given rightbecause marriage is being re-defined.c. Juvenile delinquency rates increase infamilies with single-parents, especiallyif the cause was divorce.15
  16. 16. Divorce was highly significant whenpredicting the variation in juvenileviolent crime. These findings show apositive relationship between divorce andviolent juvenile crime which supportprevious research showing that divorcecan lead to crime.--Jeannie A. Fryehttp://scholar.lib.vt.edu/theses/available/etd-05192010-095240/unrestricted/Fry_JF_T_2010.pdf , p. 40.16
  17. 17. The Most Serious Effect ofIgnoring God’s WordWhen there is no absolute rule bindinga society or community (including thechurch), the result can only lead toanarchy which usually leads toauthoritarian rule. This is our futureunless the teachings of Scripture becomethe absolute guide first for the churchand then positively impact our societyand awaken it again to God.17
  18. 18. We do well be aware that our ownhearts are prone to write our own rules. But we need to accept the warnings ofGod’s Word.(Prov 21:2 NIV) All a mans ways seemright to him, but the LORD weighs theheart.(2 Cor 5:10 NIV) For we must all appearbefore the judgment seat of Christ, thateach one may receive what is due him forthe things done while in the body, whether good or bad.18
  19. 19. II. Ignorance of God’s WordCan Be PreventedA. By Spending “Alone Time with God,”Psa 1:1-3; 119:97-98B. By Sitting Under the Instruction ofGifted Teachers and Encouraging EachOther to Practice What You Learn,Heb 3:12-14; 10:24-25.C. By Training Your Children Regularly andDiligently in God’s Word, Deu 6:6-7;Eph 6:419
  20. 20. ConclusionAlbert Mohler exhorts the church:Churches must recover the centrality andurgency of biblical teaching andpreaching, and refuse to sideline theteaching ministry of the preacher.Pastors and churches too busy–or toodistracted–to make biblical knowledge acentral aim of ministry will producebelievers who simply do not know enoughto be faithful disciples.20
  21. 21. We will not believe more than we know, and we will not live higher than ourbeliefs. The many fronts of Christiancompromise in this generation can bedirectly traced to biblical illiteracy inthe pews and the absence of biblicalpreaching and teaching in our homes andchurches.21
  22. 22. This generation must get deadly seriousabout the problem of biblical illiteracy,or a frighteningly large number ofAmericans–Christians included–will go onthinking that Sodom and Gomorrah livedhappily ever after.--Albert Mohlerhttp://www.albertmohler.com/2004/06/29/the-scandal-of-biblical-illiteracy-its-our-problem-2/22
