  1. 1. Govt. College University, Lahore Career Guidance & Placement Centre First Floor Registrar Office Building, UAN: 111 000 010 Ext. 249, Email: cgpcgcu@gmail.com Career as Doctor Introduction The title of Doctor of Medicine is one of the hardest earned of all that we strive for. As a profession, it's a mission of mercy and has a compelling fascination for young minds and hearts sensitive to suffering. It also carries with it a dignity and respectability, not easily matched. The key to success is the highest level of preparation and that is what Brilliant's courses have been designed to impart. They are highly regarded by society, well compensated for their work, and have the opportunity to have a positive influence on the lives of many people. Most doctors enjoy seeing patients, have excellent job security, and work alongside talented and accomplished colleagues. PMDC (Pakistan Medical & Dental Council) The Pakistan Medical & Dental Council is a statutory autonomous organization Constituted under the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council Ordinance, 1962. 15. 15. Govt. College University, Lahore Career Guidance & Placement Centre First Floor Registrar Office Building, UAN: 111 000 010 Ext. 249, Email: cgpcgcu@gmail.com USMLE In the United States and its territories, the individual medical licensing authorities ("state medical boards") of the various jurisdictions grant a license to practice medicine. Each medical licensing authority sets its own rules and regulations and requires passing an examination that demonstrates qualification for licensure. Results of the USMLE are reported to these authorities for use in granting the initial license to practice medicine. The USMLE provides them with a common evaluation system for applicants for initial medical licensure. FAQs Q How do I register to sit for USMLE? A You must complete current, official USMLE application forms and send them to the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) in accordance with the application instructions and announced application deadlines for Step1 & Step2. Q How are application procedures for Step 3 different from Steps 1 and 2? A While application for Steps 1 and 2 must be made by contacting the ECFMG, application for Step 3 must be made by contacting either the FSMB (Federation of State Medical Boards). Information to contact the FSMB and medical licensing authorities is available in the USMLE Bulletin of Information. Q What are the similarities and differences between Steps 1, 2 and 3 of USMLE? A The three Steps are complementary to each other and form a continuum. The test items in each Step pose questions within a consistent clinical context. Step 1, clinical diagnosis and disease pathogenesis Step 2, and clinical management Step 3 Test items are "one best answer" or "extended matching" on all three Steps. There are some differences in format of the test items between the Steps. Q What is the Step1? A It assesses whether medical school students or graduates understand and can apply important concepts of the sciences basic to the practice of medicine. Q How is Step 2 different from Step 1? A Step 2 assesses whether medical school students or graduates can apply medical knowledge, skills and understanding of clinical science essential for provision of patient care under supervision. Q How does Step 3 compare to Steps 1 and 2? A Step 3 assesses whether medical school graduates can apply medical knowledge and understanding of biomedical and clinical science essential for the unsupervised practice of medicine. Q What are the passing scores for the three Steps? A Currently the passing scores are 176 for Step 1, 170 for Step 2 and 177 for Step 3 on a three-digit scale or 75 on a two-digit scale. This corresponds to answering 55-65% of the items correctly. Both scores are Dated: 08 – 09 March, 2006 15
  16. 16. Govt. College University, Lahore Career Guidance & Placement Centre First Floor Registrar Office Building, UAN: 111 000 010 Ext. 249, Email: cgpcgcu@gmail.com reported to medical licensing authorities. All three Steps are designed to require the examinee to display a knowledge base adequate for practice of medicine. Q What are the current pass rates for the Steps? A The content-based standard used for setting the passing score means that as many as 100% of candidates could theoretically pass, or conceivably 0%. The number is not arbitrarily predetermined. Similarly, the pass rate can vary from one medical school to another and from one year to another. Q Is there a review book on USMLE? A The USMLE program publishes a General Instructions, Content Description, and Sample Items booklet for each Step. Besides general information on preparing for a Step, the booklets also provide 180 sample questions so that you can familiarize yourself with the item content and formats. No other review book is available from or recommended by the USMLE program. Q Do the Steps have to be taken at particular points during my medical education and career? A Most medical licensing authorities require completion of USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3 within a seven-year period, which begins when you pass your first Step. Also, you must pass both Steps 1 and 2 before you are eligible to take Step 3. Q Is there a limit on the number of times Steps can be taken? A Any limits are established by the individual medical licensing boards. It can vary from one time up to six times, while a few states have no limit. Q If a physician currently holds a license in one state and has not taken USMLE, is it necessary to pass USMLE to seek licensure in another state? A Generally no, although this should be specifically checked with individual medical licensing authorities or the FSMB. Q Can I re-take a Step to raise my score? A No. If you have passed a Step, you may not repeat it unless you are required to comply with a time limit or other criteria established by a medical licensing authority.
