What is a PA? <ul><li>take medical histories, perform physical examinations, and order and analyze diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, electrocardiograms and imaging studies </li></ul><ul><li>perform therapeutic procedures such as suturing, removal of minor lesions and casting </li></ul><ul><li>develops and implements a treatment plan and makes appropriate decisions regarding referral and findings to the supervising physician and other health professionals in developing a patient treatment plan </li></ul><ul><li>prescribe medication </li></ul>

Surgical Physician Assistant Program at UAB <ul><li>one of only two entry-level surgical specialty programs out of 137 physician assistant programs in the nation. </li></ul><ul><li>Graduates are considered highly trained to work as physician’s assistants in any medical setting when a surgeon is responsible, including: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>pre-operative care </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>the operating room </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>recovery room </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>intensive care unit </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>surgeon's office. </li></ul></ul>

Requirements for Admission <ul><li>Baccalaureate degree from an acredited college/university </li></ul><ul><li>A minimum score of 1000 on the GRE </li></ul><ul><li>A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (A=4.0) </li></ul><ul><li>A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in the program prerequisite courses, with a minimum grade of C in each </li></ul><ul><li>Proof of current American Heart Association CPR certification </li></ul>

Prerequisites: <ul><li>6 semester hours of Biology (for science majors) </li></ul><ul><li>3-4 semester hours of Microbiology (lab preferred but not required) </li></ul><ul><li>3-4 semester hours of Human Anatomy </li></ul><ul><li>3-4 semester hours Human Physiology </li></ul><ul><li>8-9 semester hours of General Chemistry </li></ul><ul><li>3-4 semester hours of statistics </li></ul><ul><li>9 semester hours of psychology (general, developmental, abnormal) </li></ul>
  8. 8. Application Process <ul><li>This program participates in the Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA). </li></ul>

USA Physician Assistant Program <ul><li>The selection of students for entry is very competitive. </li></ul><ul><li>Successful applicants will generally exceed the minimum criteria listed for admission. </li></ul><ul><li>Completion of a Baccalaureate degree with a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale from a regionally accredited institution prior to the starting date of the program. </li></ul><ul><li>Science GPA receives heavy emphasis in the admission decision. </li></ul><ul><li>Provisional admission may be granted to individuals with a cumulative undergraduate GPA between 2.5 and 3.0 OR 2.75 on the last 64 hours of college work. </li></ul>
  10. 10. <ul><li>Completion of prerequisite course work with a grade of &quot;C&quot; or higher: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>one (1) course each in general biology </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Anatomy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Microbiology </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Physiology </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>two (2) courses in general chemistry </li></ul></ul>

  12. 12. <ul><li>All prerequisites and/or bonus courses, even if earned through advanced placement or experiential learning, must appear as an official course on a transcript from a regionally accredited institution. </li></ul><ul><li>The Department of Physician Assistant Studies does not accept transfer credit. </li></ul>
  13. 13. Additional Requirements: <ul><li>Completion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) within the past five years. A minimum score of 900 on the combined verbal and quantitative sections is required. Although the Analytical Writing Section of the General GRE is not currently required, it is recommended that all applicants take this section. The Admissions Committee may consider adding this section to the application requirements in the future. It is highly recommended that the GRE be taken at least eight weeks prior to the application deadline to ensure that official test scores are received. </li></ul><ul><li>The USA Department of Physician Assistant Studies requires that at least one reference be from a Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), or Physician Assistant (PA). </li></ul>
  14. 14. Other Factors: <ul><li>Although out-of-state applicants are encouraged to apply, preference is granted to applicants from the University of South Alabama Service Area. </li></ul>
