    • The Surgical Team  The Surgeon - “Captain of the Ship” - The Surgical Technologist works under the direct medical supervision of the surgeon
    • Surgeon’s Duties  Pre-op: Greets patient (identify); orients patient and family; ensures permits are signed and witnessed; has patient mark surgical site  Intra-op: Assist with positioning/draping; performs the surgery; directs everyone in emergency; may assist in transfer  Post-op: Notifies family of patient’s condition; dictates operative report

    • Anesthesia’s Duties  Pre-op: Interviews patient, discusses options; does physical assessment; orders pre-op medications  Intra-op: Administers anesthesia and monitors patient  Post-op: Terminates anesthesia, removes patient to PACU and give report
    • Circulator  Registered Nurse  Practical Nurse (LPN)  Surgical Technologist
    • Circulator’s Duties  Pre-op: Interview patient, assessment, checks permits, prepares OR, transports patient  Intra-op: Assist sterile team members; gowning, gloving, positioning, prepping and draping; procures supplies, care of specimens, counts  Post-op: Dressing Application; clean-up of patient, transport to PACU and give report
    • Surgical Assistant  Physician assistant (PA)  Certified Registered nurse first assistant (RNFA)  Certified first assistant (CFA) or surgical assistant certified (SAC)  Surgical technologist (CST or ST)  Residents, interns, medical students, registered nurses, and students
