Instead always tell what ishappening in observable and measurableterms.Problem is a difference between what is actually happening andwhat you desire to be happening.
    13. 13. One Minute Goal Setting Summary1. Agree on your goals.2. See what good behavior looks like.3. Write out each of your goals on a single sheet of paperusing less than 250 words.4. Read and re-read each goal, which requires only a minuteor so each time you do it.5. Take a minute every once in a while out of your day tolook at your performance.6. See whether or not your behavior matches your goals.

You don’t have to try to catch peopledoing something right all the time.Just when new people first work here orwhen they begin a new project orresponsibility.Because the manager and the employee have other ways ofknowing when a job performance is „praise-worthy‟. You both canreview the data in the information system.

Tell people how good you feel about what they didright, and how it helps the organization and the otherpeople who work there.5. Stop for a moment of silence to let them “feel” how goodyou feel.6. Encourage them to do more of the same.7. Shake hands or touch people in a way that makes it clearthat you support their success in the organization.

    21. 21. The Third Secret:One Minute Reprimands“Every one makesmistakes now andthen. Even to theprofessionals.”Although in this “catching people doing right”environment, we should not let significant mistakehappen without reprimand, to avoid its repetition.
    22. 22. You try to catch them doing right. Butif they have all skills to do somethingright and yet they don’t;Give them One Minute Reprimand.If people have been doing a job for some time and they know howto do it well, yet they make a mistake, it is the time to One MinuteReprimand takes turn.

Don‟t• Don‟t attack him/her as a person, only his/herbehavior.• Don‟t gunnysack • Don‟t “bombard”Do• When it‟s over, it‟s over.• Always do the 1st half and the 2nd half in sequence.• Do tell them that they are valuable and worthwhile.How to deliver the ReprimandLearn about the mistakefirst, then confirms thefacts.Come in person. Tell him/herprecisely what he/she did wrong.Tell him/her what you feelabout it.1st half of One Minute Reprimand2nd half of One Minute ReprimandReminds him/her howcompetent he/she is.Make sure that the only reason thisreprimand happens is because youhave so much respect for him/her.Make it clear that you donot welcome that samemistake again.Dos/Don‟ts
    24. 24. One Minute Reprimands Summary1. Tell people beforehand that you are going to let them know how they aredoing and in no uncertain terms.The first half of the reprimand:2. Reprimand people immediately.3. Tell people what they did wrong – be specific.4. Tell people how you feel about what they did wrong – and in no uncertainterms.5. Stop for a few seconds of uncomfortable silence to let them feel how youfeel.The second half of reprimand:6. Shake hands, or touch them in a way that lets them know you arehonestly on their side.7. Remind them how much you value them.8. Reaffirm that you think well of them but not of their performance in thissituation.9. Realize that when the reprimand is over, it‟s over.
