Kriti Bus Design Competition...
Kriti Bus Design Competition
My very first design assignment was probably not from the department but thanks to the intensive activities going in the campus of IITG, I got my first design task in the KRITI'09, the inter hostel technical competition of IITG. The problem statement was- Design a new bus for the existing travel routine of IITG buses.
We had got a very strong team of 8 members, out of which, four were from mechanical department, and four were from design department. It was really a fun working with the seniors. The kinda way, we worked as a team were really superb.
First we identified the problems in the existing buses, did the brainstorming of nearly four hours. After doing that, we moved to the existing plus points in the buses that are already in use. We considered them seriously to be included in the new bus.
Then we divided the work in the individuals. Mech.Dept. guys were given the responsibility to research about all the functional and technical aspects. The design aspects were handled by the design dept guys. All the guys did their work superbly. I was given the responsibility to assist in the storyboards, research work regarding many aspects of the buses, sitting arrangement, ergonomics etc. That was the time I made my first storyboard(as you can fell by looking at it, how horrible I was with sketching at that time).
After the intense work we input, we compiled all the work, discussed all the important points, modified the project accordingly, added the extra facilities to it, keeping in mind the cost and finally came out with the concept of a new bus.
We gave our presentation in front of the judges. They seemed to be very pleased with that. The competition turned out to be totally in our favour and came FIRST with 282 points, along with the huge difference of 80 points to the second, out of total 300 points.
Some Glances to our Project :-
The Present Bus has :-
1. 74Kw Power Online Engine but vibrates a lot and is noisy
2. Superb 54 seating capacity but not a single seat for disabled
3. High Speed Capacity but not an efficient braking capacity
4. Wide windscreen to get a perfect front view but no device to see what's at the back
5. The ability to make you exercise each time you get on and off the bus.
THE NEW BUS-
-Engine to be used of FORD F250
Name - 5.4L 3-valve V8
Power 300 HP@5000 RPM
Orientation - Vertical
REAR MOUNTED V-ENGINE
-Energy recovered from Air Suspension System
-Partially Low Floor Height
-ID card as the new ticket
NAME- Bar Code Swipe - Model BETA
2)Memory - 2000 Records
3)Reader - Infrared Barcode Slot Reader
4)Dimension - 220(w) X 95(h) X 65(d) mm
5)Data Transfer Speed - 1200-9600Kbps
6)Power Consumption - 1 Watt
7)Cost - Rs 7000 to Rs 8000.
-Vented Disc Brake(with brake energy recoverd system)
-Effective seat layout to suit IITG System
One important point in it is, there are many instances where the bus is fully filled and sometimes almost empty,
So, there is a need of turnable seats according to need.
Seating Capacity - 45+
Standing Capacity - 40+(for the people who want to travel intra campus, like from hostel to NAC)
Cycle Space - 5 cycles
-Energy Efficient heating System for the winters
-Easy Access ramp for disabled
-Improved rear/side view mirror system
-Effective Passenger Information System
-Ergonomic seat for Human Comfort and safety
(Anthropometric considerations for seating)
-Engine sound Amplification for the driver(Study in the Indian context)
- Bifold Hyadraulic Doors to avoid fotboard travelling
Currently the project got approval by Institute for executing the Project 'Campus Bus' which would be patented by name of the Institute & would be available by feb 2011. I m the Design Lead of the project.
