  • [Briefly list the participating firms]
  • The Highly Regarded Reputation of SEO 5) When an alumnus or intern mentions their SEO experience to investment banking recruiters and top-level managers, they are often greeted with an instant smile of recognition. SEO interns have been leaving an impression on investment banks since 1980 when the first class of SEO interns embarked upon their careers on Wall Street. Because of this reputation, SEO interns are often given more responsibilities than other interns. Projects are challenging, rewarding, and are typical of the work that first year analysts are involved with. SEO interns might be expected to stay overnight to finish analyses on an investment banking deal, write and finish a research report on a company that has just released its earnings before the next morning, or assemble a report of the latest earnings release information of companies that a trader is covering. Training and Workshops 3) At the beginning of the SEO internship, staff members, SEO alumni, and other industry professionals provide intensive training to interns, including how to best make use of the opportunities that lie ahead for the rest of the summer. Since SEO interns are highly regarded in the investment banking industry and have an obligation to maintain that reputation, more will be expected of SEO interns. The training sessions and on-going workshops will focus on the divisions and functions of an investment bank, as well as strategies that will teach SEO interns how to perform well and exceed expectations, learn from projects, and secure job offers. These exclusive seminars and training sessions provide a behind-the-scenes look into the investment banking world that you will not get anywhere else.

  • Networking 2) Unlike a regular investment banking internship, you will also have the opportunity to network with top-level management and recruiters at all the participating firms at seminars throughout the summer. Often, the CEO or other head of an investment bank will speak at the seminar, which is followed by a reception that allows SEO interns to network with recruiters, Managing Directors, VPs, associates, and analysts. This becomes a vital aspect of the SEO experience because it also provides a window for SEO interns to distinguish the cultural differences between the firms.   [Include personal experience involving networking at an SEO seminar.] One past SEO intern had a conversation with the CEO of Deutsche Bank that lasted for 45 minutes! Some individuals who spoke at last summer’s seminars include: Pat War, the Co-CEO of Goldman Sachs, Philip Kieval of Citigroup (title?), and etc.   Mentoring 4) All SEO interns are assigned mentors who are alumni currently working in the finance industry. This one-on-one mentoring scheme becomes very important as students learn about the do’s and don’ts of the investment banking industry.
  • SEO Alumni Network 4) Being an SEO intern also means becoming a life-long member of the powerful SEO Alumni Network, which currently consists of more than 3500 people located around the world who are now involved in all types of industries. Some have risen up the ranks in a number of investment banks and others have started their own businesses. It also means being a member of the SEO family, which involves providing mentoring and support to future SEO interns. This is an alumni network that is unlike any other, and everyone who has been through the SEO training and internship experience has a unique sense of connection and allegiance to one another.   International Experience 6) SEO is continually expanding and establishing chapters in new cities and countries. SEO London is now offering first year students who have participated in the SEO London Career Program the opportunity to apply to the SEO Career Program in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Hong Kong. This experience provides students with a global perspective at a very early stage in their careers. The SEO Alumni Network is present at these international venues as well, continuing to provide career advice and support to interns throughout the summer.

    • Keep it to one page (!!!!!) and have a simple structure (no paragraphs please!) – name, contact details, dob, education, work experience, interests and achievements, additional skills (see template)
    • Use consistent tense
    • Look it over with a “fresh pair of eyes.” Have someone else proofread and give feedback/check errors
    • Keep a copy (so you know WHY you applied and WHAT you wrote)
    • Spell/grammar check
  • Preparing your cover letter
    • Think of it as a way to frame and position your CV to be attractive to SEO or a specific bank.
    • You will not have a summary or objectives on the top of a CV for investment banking, so use the cover-letter as a guide to the most important features of your CV.
    • Each cover-letter should be different, so always keep a copy and check over who you wrote it to!
    • Be specific and concrete – your cover letter is your opportunity to paint a very visual picture of who you are, what motivates you, what your successes are, etc. Let us see you in action!
    • Make sure that cover letter has a structure as you would any essay
      • Paragraph one: Why you are interested in industry
      • Paragraph two: Why you are interested in company/SEO
      • Paragraph three: Why would you be great candidate
  • CV & Cover Letter Bin-Proofing Definition: Avoiding catastrophic errors that make SEO throw your CV in the bin, and that will make recruiters give you a “black mark.”
      • Do not have any of the following formatting:
        • Multiple page CVs
        • Dynamic summaries or objectives on the top of your CV, motto
        • Fancy fonts (Ariel/Times New Roman ok. Anything swirly or
        • multi-coloured not ok)
      • Do not make the following content mistakes:
        • Poor spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors
        • Inaccurate or untrue information
        • Obviously the content of a cover letter you used for another company and forgetting to change the company name.
        • Incorrect dates on your CV (there is a background check, so make sure it’s right!)
        • Misspelling contact person’s name
        • Inconsistent tenses
        • Negative comments about past work experience/colleagues
        • Procrastination – if you leave CVs and cover-letters to the last minute, you WILL make mistakes – this will seem lazy.
        • Silly/inappropriate e-mail address (i.e. [email_address] ). Create a professional one
        • Wrong or outdated phone number
        • WRITING IN TEXT-SPEAK, U NO WAT I MEAN?
      • If you do not receive a favourable response, do not send a rude e-mail or leave a rude phone message. Recruiters have good memories!!
