  • 3. 1. What Makes a Strong Query?
    • Principles of a good query
      • Keep Your Query as Simple as possible
      • Always limit your conditions
      • Try to avoid running your query in peak hours
    • Examples of bad queries
    • Examples of better versions of those queries
  • 4. 2. Common Questions About Queries
    • Why does my query keep timing out?
    • My query is returning 0 supporters but I know it should return supporters
    • Why can’t I see my donations/actions/events information through the query tool?
    • When I query on legislative district, why don’t I get any responses? (i.e. append scripts)
  • 5. 3. Query Best Practices
    • If your query is overly complex, dump into a group, and re-do query including the new group.
      • Always look for ways to limit your conditions—ex: setting ranges (using ZIP as opposed to state)
      • Use the “Is In List” to speed up query (faster than multiple equals)
        • Lets you search for multiple people at the same time
      • “ Or” Options and it’s pros/cons
        • Provides you with the opportunity to create more complex query
        • Complexity=long load time, so use caution
  • 6. 4. How Queries Work: beyond the supporter record
    • Smart groups
    • Email queries
    • Queries as an essential tracking tool
  • 7. How queries work: Smart groups
    • Runs overnight when it’s not in peak hours
    • Completely hands off—will run every day and re-adjust the group to include necessary people base on query criteria.
    • Greedy Smart Groups
    • Good for setting daily exports—allows you to automate the whole process
  • 8. How queries work: Email Queries
      • Receive Email, Email Status, Email History, Unsubscribe
        • What do all of these conditions mean?
        • How are they different from one another?
      • Why should I care about these queries?
  • 9. How queries work: Queries as an essential tracking tool
      • How did my supporters enter Salsa: a tale

          • What makes your sign up unique?
          • Tracking Code
          • “Automatically Add to groups” and tags
        • Imports look up
          • Source Detail--filename (Pros/Cons)
          • Last Modified (Pros/Cons)
          • Date Created (Pros/Cons)
