  • 1. The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelts Darkest Journey by Candice Millard One Of My Favorite Reads This YearAt once an incredible adventure narrative and a penetrating biographicalportrait, The River of Doubt is the true story of Theodore Roosevelt’sharrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on earth. The River of Doubt—it is a black, uncharted tributary of the Amazon thatsnakes through one of the most treacherous jungles in the world. Indiansarmed with poison-tipped arrows haunt its shadows; piranhas glide throughits waters; boulder-strewn rapids turn the river into a roiling cauldron. After his humiliating election defeat in 1912, Roosevelt set his sights on themost punishing physical challenge he could find, the first descent of anunmapped, rapids-choked tributary of the Amazon. Together with his sonKermit and Brazil’s most famous explorer, Cândido Mariano da SilvaRondon, Roosevelt accomplished a feat so great that many at the timerefused to believe it. In the process, he changed the map of the westernhemisphere forever.Along the way, Roosevelt and his men faced an unbelievable series ofhardships, losing their canoes and supplies to punishing whitewater rapids, and enduring starvation, Indian attack, disease, drowning, and a murderwithin their own ranks. Three men died, and Roosevelt was brought to thebrink of suicide. The River of Doubt brings alive these extraordinary eventsin a powerful nonfiction narrative thriller that happens to feature one of themost famous Americans who ever lived. From the soaring beauty of the Amazon rain forest to the darkest night ofTheodore Roosevelt’s life, here is Candice Millard’s dazzling debut.
  • 2. Features:* Click here to view our Condition Guide and Shipping PricesAfter finishing this thrilling and insightful book, I nearly tried to contact theauthor to thank her for writing it. I love Teddy, have read three bios of him,all from different perspectives, but before River, I dont think there wasanything devoted to this amazing trip. To me, this book is a great examplehow rich and enjoyable it can be from a readers persective to have askilled author place a magnifying glass on an event merely mentioned inpassing by comprehensive biographies. From reading her bio, the authorwas uniquely qualified to write this account. She captured the en ormity ofnot only the larger-than-life former president, but the South Americanwilderness. The descriptions of the terrain made me feel I was travellingwith Teddy, Kermit and the rest. The contrast between Teddy and his wiseand benevolent guide Rondon was protrayed brilliantly and, I believe hasrelevance to todays issues. Teddys son Kermit was unselfish to go withhis dad, at the expense of delaying his person preferences and plans, andwas at the zenith of his strength and stamina, making knowledge of hislater fall even sadder. Splicing earlier and later history into the tripsaccount deepened my appreciation of one of the greatest and mostinfluential men in US history. Thank you, Candice, for writing this!!
