The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo Our Familys Favorite Book!Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named EdwardTulane. The rabbit was very pleased with himself, and for good reason: hewas owned by a girl named Abilene, who adored him completely. Andthen, one day, he was lost. . . .Kate DiCamillo takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the depths ofthe ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the bedside of an ailing child tothe bustling streets of Memphis. Along the way, we are shown a miracle --that even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, andto love again.I selected Edward Tulane as a teacher read aloud for my third grade class. At first, the plot seemed a bit involved and disjointed for younger children. How could so many things happen to a defenseless china rabbit? Itseemed that we would never get to the good part. The kids did not reactmuch as I read, which is highly unusual. After reading a few chapters, however, the kids began to beg for me to read another when our timeended each day. While the subject matter can be a bit brutal at times, westopped to discuss any misunderstood themes, and, soon, the kids hungon every word! The initial plot twist of Edward becoming separated fromhis owner made us wonder if he would ever return to her again. KateDiCamillo amazingly twists the plot in the last few pages of the book.Prepare to have cold chills and goosebumps! My class and I certainly did!
