THE AMOUNT OF RELIANCE <ul><li>Amount of reliance on textbooks indicates the perception of the teacher towards t/b & T&L process </li></ul><ul><li>Over dependence on t/b will see each text is carefully studied & followed meticulously </li></ul><ul><li>Over reliance is more commonly found in schools with centralized syllabus, (i.e. Malaysia) where officially approved t/b is prescribed for use </li></ul><ul><li>C9-11 </li></ul>

DISADVANTAGES OF OVER RELIANCE <ul><li>Possible lack of variety in teaching procedures </li></ul><ul><li>Reduced range of response to individual student needs & problems </li></ul><ul><li>Possible lack of spontaneity </li></ul><ul><li>Reduced level of creativity in teaching techniques & language use </li></ul><ul><li>Reduce the importance of individual contributions of the teacher </li></ul><ul><li>Stifle innovations </li></ul><ul><li>Severely limits flexibility </li></ul>

BALANCED RELATIONSHIP <ul><li>Balanced means a basic textbook is used selectively and supported by a variety of supplementary materials </li></ul><ul><li>Teachers can select materials from a range of alternatives & sources </li></ul><ul><li>T/b serves as a framework for language content & sequencing but used selectively & supplemented by other materials whenever desirable. </li></ul><ul><li>C9-11 </li></ul>

ADVANTAGES OF BALANCED RELATIONSHIP <ul><li>There is a common framework provided by the textbook that acts as a point of reference </li></ul><ul><li>Less experienced teachers can use the book as heavily as they need to </li></ul><ul><li>There is a scope for replacing unsuitable parts of the book with other materials </li></ul><ul><li>There is a scope for teachers to develop confidence to experiment with alternative materials </li></ul><ul><li>Gives more variety to classroom activities & teaching techniques </li></ul><ul><li>Gives more flexible response to students’ individual needs. </li></ul>
