Library History
In 1891 California established a system of law libraries and police courts. The Sacramento County Public Law Library is the 6th largest of California’s 58 county law libraries.

The mission of providing free public access to legal information began in 1904 in the Sacramento County Courthouse, at the corner of 6th and I Street.
The first police court was adjacent to the law library at the corner of 6th and H.

The library moved in 1965 to the basement of the Sacramento Superior Courthouse, at 721 Ninth Street. The library’s collection grew but lack of sufficient space prompted a search for a new location outside the courthouse domain.

In 2001 after extensive renovations to the historic Hall of Justice building at 813 Sixth Street, the Law Library moved into the first two floors and held its official dedication ceremony on May 2, 2002.

“An integral element of our democracy, our republic, our free society, is the theorem that we are a nation of laws, and that each person is entitled to equal justice under the law. But the theorem holds little value if the resources necessary to realize it, are not available to all. The free public law library not only symbolizes our commitment to the precept of equal justice, it houses the means and tools to ensure it.”

At the dedication, County Board of Supervisors member Roger Dickenson gave the following address…

Today the Sacramento County Public Law Library has a 65,000+ volume collection of California and Federal codes and cases, practice and research materials, digests, encyclopedias, and form books availablein print and online.

A team of highly skilled professional, technical, and clerical staff work together to provide appropriate resources to meet the legal and information needs of our patrons.

The Training Center utilizes 13 computer terminals and state-of-the-art presentation equipment.

Training and Education
SCPLL conducts a variety of classes on recent legal developments, judicial perspectives, practice management tools, use of the internet, and online legal research databases. Classes are held in the Law Library’s Training Center.

The Sacramento County Public Law Library offers space for meetings, seminars, workshops and/or depositions. Our state-of-the-art computer training center, boardroom and meeting room are available for rent online.

SCPLL coordinates the “Lawyers in the Library” program every Monday evening between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. Local attorneys provide brief advice and referral for low income patrons in the library. A bilingual attorney, who speaks Spanish, is available to assist customers the first Monday of each month.

“Lawyers in the Library”

The Civil Self-Help Center provides workshops and limited legal assistance on a variety of civil legal issues to those without attorneys, if they have a civil matter in Sacramento County court or reside in Sacramento County. There are no income eligibility requirements to receive the free services.
