Slideshare doesn’t support Keynote presentations and there is no way to add speakers notes afterwards so I’ll add them here:

    1. OpenStreetMap is a community effort that tries to be an alternative for Google Maps or Yahoo Local Maps, let’s see why.
    2. Everyone knows Google Maps. Google was on of the first to come up with the “slippy maps” where a lot of small tiles make the map. This innovative interface changed the online world of mapping.

    3. But there are others as well: Yahoo Local Maps (used in Flickr), MapQuest Maps, Mappy.

    4. Why do we need another map? Aren’t the previous examples good enough? Obviously they are not (or this presentation would be pretty useless).
    5. Google and Yahoo! both allow developers to make use of their maps for free by using an API. But... you are limited by the possibilities of the API and by the rules set out in the Term of Service. E.g. you can’t change the maps color scheme or remove the logo if you would like.

    7. All maps contain errors which can take ages before they are corrected.
    - human errors: wrong spelling, street shapes, etc.
    - changed traffic situations since the last updates.
    - copyright errors.
Copyrighted maps deliberately include wrong elements (e.g. a street that doesn’t exist) to prove someone copied their map if this element shows up in another map. This means a maps is never 100% correct.

    8. OpenStreetMap is a community project to map the world, a wiki for maps if you like (rendered by itoworld.com). The screenshot above shows the changes over time. Everyone can add data to the map, correct changes or use the data for other purposes.

    9. A view of greater London in OpenStreetMap. This is only one rendering, different renderings are possible to fit in a layout or to analyze data in other or unusual ways.

    10. Another use of the same data in a sister project. A cycle map of Antwerp, Belgium to show that different renderings can be used for different purposes.

    11. The current state of the Belgian map (rendered by itoworld.com). Good coverage around Antwerp, Liège and Brussels but still a lot to do.

    12. Shows the administrative boundaries in Belgium (rendered by itoworld.com). Only Brussels shows up today. The coverage in the Netherlands is much better as “AND Automotive Navigation Data” donated all their data to the project. Would be nice to find some organization in Belgium that’s willing to donate data as well.

    13. Current map of Ghent (rendered by itoworld.com).

    14. Map of Ghent with the railroads and tramaways (rendered by itoworld.com) shows that OpenStreetMap data can be used for analytical purposes as well. This could be useful to decide where to implement industrial areas for example.

    15. Bridges in and around Ghent (rendered by itoworld.com) to show that data can be used in ways that nobody thought of before. Not that useful for you or me but maybe helpful in certain cases.

    16. The first way to contribute is driving around your neighborhood by bike (foot, car or horse) with a GPS to collect raw data points and upload them to OSM.

    17. Second way is attending mapping parties. The same as the previous one but with a social aspect. You get some drinks afterwards. :)

    18. Third way to contribute. Yahoo! contributed their satellite images to the project. An online Flash tool let’s you paint streets and features over these images. Nice! But... still fieldwork needed as there are no street names on these images and a lot of them are out-of-date.

    19. Other ways to contribute. Write to city councils to ask if they could implement RSS feeds with traffic works or open source maps or other geographical data they have. Or find another way to contribute: develop, present, write posts,...

    20. Flickr uses OpenStreetMap data in their Flickr Map for certain cities. Check Baghdad for example.

    21. All content in this presentation is CC licensed, here are the credits for the different images used.
