Introduction to How Craigslist Works 1The sites main function is to host classified adsthat cover practically every category you canthink of, including housing, job postings, itemsfor sale, services and personals. Theres also aforums section that allows users to discusstopics on everything from gardening to theLinux operating system. Posting for mostclassifieds categories on craigslist is free, andits also free to browse and respond to ads. TheWeb site doesnt have any flashy animation orgraphics
  • 3. Introduction to How Craigslist Works 2The site has a range of broad categories, and eachcategory has several subcategories, making it easy tonavigate to the appropriate section quickly. For example,the "for sale" category features subcategories likecomputer, books, electronics, sporting, motorcycles andcollectibles, among others. Most ads include the memberse-mail address. Craigslist offers a function that masks e-mail so that members dont have to worry about theiraddress being openly available.
  • 4. The Craigslist NetworkEach craigslist site focuses on a specific community.Originally, craigslist only listed classifieds andannouncements within San Francisco. As the service grewin popularity, expanding well beyond founder CraigNewmarks original concept, craigslist added other cities toits network. The first city to join the network was Boston in2000. A couple of months later, Chicago, Los Angeles, NewYork City, Portland, San Diego, Seattle and Washington, D.C. followed suit. Today, more than 450 cities have acraigslist community site.
  • 5. Craigslist FinancialsCraigslist started as a pet project but blossomed into a full-fledged company. In 1999, craigslist incorporated as a for-profit organization. The company also purchased thedomain craigslist.com to prevent anyone from buying it andmisleading craigslist members. Each year since then,craigslist has expanded to cover more cities andcommunities, becoming a powerful financial force in theprocess.
  • 6. Craigslist ControversyAn interested buyer contacts the seller and says hell senda check for the item, but when the check arrives, its writtenfor a much larger amount. When the seller contacts thebuyer to inform him of the difference, the buyer apologizesand explains that he wrote the wrong amount afterconfusing it with another purchase. He tells the seller todeposit the check and wire him the difference.Usersposting to craigslist must first click on a button that saysthey understand and accept the terms of use.
