  3. 3. • Ceiling is 12,000 ftsq • Took 2-3 years to complete • Depicts life of Jesus Christ
  4. 4. • Michelangelo • Famous sculptor and painter • His most famous works are paintings • Painted the Chapel against his will
  5. 5. The Last Judgement •One of the last pieces done by Michelangelo in the Chapel •One of the most famous, if not the most famous painting in the Chapel • Represents the book or Revelations in the Bible
  6. 6. • Conclave: Election of the new Pope • Oldest ongoing method to choose a leader of an institution • Camerlengo pronounces the Pope dead • College of Cardinals all vote • Ballots are burnt after each count • Must have 2/3 vote for Papal election
  7. 7. • Once the votes are counted the Cardinals send smoke up the chimney • Black means there was not a 2/3 majority and there must be a recount • White means there is a New Pope
  8. 8. • The chapel still holds a Catholic Mass on Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday • Other than these dates the chapel is only used as a spot to visit or papal elections
  9. 9. • Over the years the paintings had become tarnished because of all the sweat, dirt, and other things tracked in by the guests • The Chapel attracts 15 to 20 thousand a day equally about 4 million a year
  10. 10. • Restoration • Was some controversy because the post restoration pictures contained colors that were brighter than intended
