Alternative Energy Successes: Searching for Common Trends Towards Large-Scale Implementation Blake Hamilton Carlos Rymer Danielle LaFrance Jeffrey Gunther Kimberley D.C. Schroder Tom Condzella Zachary Shalla Environment and Society Fall 2006 December 6 th , 2006
Research Question

Countries that have partially transitioned away from fossil fuels:

Developed - Germany and Iceland

Developing - Brazil and Egypt

Goal: Identify the socioeconomic and political conditions necessary for large-scale alternative energy adoption

What conditions are necessary for a country to successfully use sustainable large-scale alternative energy sources?
Problem Statement

Currently fossil fuels, the world's primary energy sources, are large contributors

to pollution, unsustainable, and primary causes of global warming (IPCC, 2001)

Various Alternative Energy Adoption Approaches:

Germany – public support drove success in alternative energy

Iceland – taxed oil to support geothermal energy & hydrogen production

Brazil – taxed oil to subsidize ethanol and flex-fuel vehicle production

Egypt – nationalist movement spearheaded with hydroelectric power

Hypothesis

Economic Capital

Public Demand/Desire

Available Natural Resources

Infrastructure and Industrial Capacity

Political Will

Several conditions and socioeconomic trends need to be present in a country or region in order to widely implement alternative energy.
Methods

We will analyze the socioeconomic, political, and physical conditions of four countries that have successfully implemented alternative energy technologies at large scales. Two researchers will be sent to each country for one year to perform the following activities:

Research government archives of policies and other information

Conduct in-depth interviews with key figures

Investigate first-hand the country’s natural resource capacity and infrastructure

Expected Outcomes

Add to the literature about how countries have successfully transitioned away from fossil fuels

Describe alternative energy transitions in the context of culture, politics, and economics

Elucidate both governmental and non-governmental interventions that can help foster such transitions
