take stock of you add- on requirements • started out with near zero add-ons availabl • many popular add-ons have been ported

use as opp to streamline site • reduce reliance on third-party add-ons • maybe a different, native way to do the same thing

upgrade directly on server • use a sandbox version of the site • use version control • use a dev server or domain

should clients upgrade? • new projects only for me • must be a reason • most clients wouldn't pay for it anyway

move the files • download the EE 2 software • rename existing system directory to system_old • copy over new system directory, rename to whatever • update index.php with system directory name • rename themes to themes_old, copy over new themes • set permissions • copy over old config.php file to config/ of EE 2

preparing your templates

move templates • all templates in db must also be saved as files or installer chokes • empty template files are currently problematic but i filed a bug

does EE update templates with channel? • yes

trackbacks are gone

No more Gallery Module • the site i upgraded had a gallery module. EE 2 left the database tables intact, so i could write a custom add-on or code to use that gallery data (or export it)

ask for help • EL wants to make sure your upgrade works. my ﬁrst try didn't but they helped.
