January 1st Class – Wednesday Jan. 1st 9:30AM, 296 Dunhams Corner Road Building Shuls out of Churches In 1858 New York City’s first Eastern European synagogue, the Beth HaMidrash, purchased the Welsh Methodist Church on Allen St. to serve as its first permanent home. Immediately, R’ Judah Middleman of the rival Beth Hamidrash Livnei Yisrael Yelide Polin challenged the halakhic permissibility of converting a church into a Jewish house of worship. He wrote to the famed R’ Yosef Shaul Nathanson of Lemberg asking for a response. Not to be outdone, the leader of Beth Hamidrash, R’ Abraham Ash, sent the question to R’ Yaakov Ettlinger of Altona. Later, R’ Moshe Aaronsohn, who himself had rivalries with both R’ Ash and Middleman, wrote a responsum on the issue. In this class we will analyze all of these responsa and then look at the later opinion of R’ Moshe Feinstein. Sources attached. Breakfast sponsorships available.
