  • Intro ourselves/office We see many families and children in our office, and are well aware of the current status of health in our community – too often we see children who are obese, have poor posture and lifestlye habits, and are showing signs of early degen and chronic disease. They are really the future of our society. We wanted to host an event focused on educating the children to be aware of their health in several areas – and to give them info about the choices they have. And so – happy healthy kids day was born

    • 2 grade 4 teachers, eager to help
  • 8. One Year in the Making
    • Obtained approval for participation from School Board Superintendants
    • Contacted all schools including public, separate, and private boards
    • Requested forecast of grade 4 enrolment from each school by March 2009
    • Once schools agreed to participate, all grade 4 teachers were contacted

    • We p artnered with the city through a reciprocal agreement to obtain Stratford Rotary Complex conference rooms at no cost
    • Letters to schools to confirm details of the event for Happy Healthy Kids day including date, time, and registration forms

    • 7 :00 am – committee and volunteers a rrive
    • 8:45am - 1 st bus load of kids arrives
    • 9 :00 am – kids are split into groups and head off to their first station
    • Every 15 minutes throughout the day – the kids rotate from station to station
    • Every 3 hours – more busloads of kids arrive

    • A booklet was given to each student
    • It contained:

      • Interactive activities to be completed at each station
      • Further activities to be followed up in the classroom

    • 60 student volunteers from St. Mikes
    • 5 pounds of cheese
    • 3 bushels of apples
    • 15 yoga mats
    • 10 hula hoops
    • 4 back packs
    • 800 hands massaging each other
    • 24 whistle blows and only 1 megaphone !
  • 25. Things that surprised us at our station …
    • Some grade 4 kids weigh 195lbs
    • Many kids did not have breakfast
    • Kids wore Backpacks that were twice as heavy as recommended
    • Many kids displayed poor posture
  • 26. Teacher Feedback
    • The children were engaged, interested, and happy to participate.
    • Great combination of information and activity.
    • Appropriate for children of this age.
    • There were many students who have never had their teeth or eyes checked.
    • I look forward to revisiting the material we learned and using the resources you provided.
    • Overall it was a huge success. It’s a great way of making children aware of the different aspects of their health.
    • A wealth of great information.
    • Resources can be adapted into curriculum area and was a valuable use of our time.
    • Thanks -the majority of students learned facts they have not received from home.
  • 27. Overall, Happy Healthy Kids Day 2009 was a tremendous success! At the end of the day, all of the professionals involved were amazed at the energy & participation of the grade fours, were happy with the outreach they could provide to our community, and were utterly exhausted – yet ready and willing to plan for next year!
