Pennsylvania's Targeted  Industry Clusters <ul><li>An industry cluster consists of a group of industries that are closely linked by common product markets, labor pools, similar technologies, supplier chains, and /or other economic ties.  </li></ul><ul><li>Clusters can take on strategic importance because activities that benefit one group member will generally have positive spillover effects on other members of the cluster.  </li></ul>Berks County Workforce Investment Board

Pennsylvania's Targeted  Industry Clusters <ul><li>In the 2011-12 Program Year: </li></ul><ul><li>11 Industry Clusters identified </li></ul><ul><li>$1.632 Million awarded from PA DOLI with 7 Clusters targeted in PY2011-12 </li></ul><ul><li>39 Industry Partnerships funded (down from 72 in previous PY) </li></ul><ul><li>To date: 6,300 Employers Partnered </li></ul><ul><li>To date: >105K Trained Statewide </li></ul>Berks County Workforce Investment Board

Mission <ul><li>The Berks County AMDM Industry Partnership is an industry-driven initiative to fuel the manufacturing base competitiveness and promote economic development of the region through workforce performance enhancement opportunities, transfer of technology and best business practice understanding, and advancement of market innovation. </li></ul>Berks County Workforce Investment Board

Vision <ul><li>The Berks County AMDM Industry Partnership commits to advancing the strategic importance of this targeted industry cluster by providing partnership structure and an interactive forum for Berks manufacturers in support of the industry partnership’s mission. </li></ul>Berks County Workforce Investment Board

Berks County AMDM IP <ul><li>Currently: </li></ul><ul><li>5 th year of partnership </li></ul><ul><li>39 member companies </li></ul><ul><li>$60,000 award for incumbent worker training in PY2011-12 </li></ul><ul><li>Reimbursement of up to 60% of member cost for eligible training </li></ul>Berks County Workforce Investment Board

  9. 9. <ul><li>Incumbent Worker Training Continue the consortium’s foundation of incumbent worker training by supporting training in leadership skills and technical areas of manufacturing. </li></ul><ul><li>Partnership Activities: </li></ul><ul><li>Identify common career ladders in the AMDM sub-industries. </li></ul><ul><li>Assess training needs with respect to those career ladders. </li></ul><ul><li>Identify training curriculum required to support workers in the various career ladders. </li></ul><ul><li>Work with educational partners to ensure the necessary curriculum is available. </li></ul>Berks County Workforce Investment Board
  10. 10. <ul><li>Incumbent Worker Training Continue the consortium’s foundation of incumbent worker training by supporting training in leadership skills and technical areas of manufacturing. </li></ul><ul><li>Partner with PA CareerLink® Berks County to recruit and screen applicants, to assess skill needs of specific positions using WorkKeys® Profiling, to assess the Functional and Personal Skills of applicants and incumbent workers, and use On-the-Job Training for new hires </li></ul><ul><li>Assist Consortium members in developing training plans. </li></ul><ul><li>Coordinate training programs as outlined by the members’ consolidated training plan. </li></ul><ul><li>Measure the effectiveness of training. </li></ul>Berks County Workforce Investment Board

Industry Promotion & Career Awareness <ul><li>Provide a pipeline of new employees to the industry by actively engaging high school and middle school students and their parents, teachers and guidance counselors. </li></ul><ul><li>Provide a pipeline of new employees to the industry by actively engaging underemployed and unemployed workers in the region through local PA CareerLink®. </li></ul>Berks County Workforce Investment Board

Capabilities of the AMDM IP in the Region <ul><li>Actively promote the broad expertise and manufacturing capabilities that exist in the region. </li></ul><ul><li>Engage the Leadership of consortium members. </li></ul><ul><li>Explore collaborative business opportunities with other industry partnerships – Packaging, Plastics, Industrial Maintenance, Metals/Metal Fabrication, Logistics & Transportation. </li></ul><ul><li>Encourage business relationships among consortium members. </li></ul>Berks County Workforce Investment Board
