      • To understand w hat motivate s a human being to act
      • To experiment with an approach for discovering what motivates a person
      • What is motivation?
      • Exercise: Identifying your truest values
      • Questions
    3. Just What Is Motivation ?
      • Determines how we use our time
      • Unconscious and abstract (fuzzy) systems that drive our purpose as a human being
      • Govern ALL human behaviour
      • How we judge good & bad, right & wrong, etc.
      • Key criteria we use to e valu at e how we have used our time
      • It’s about our “Values”!
    4. Values are Hierarchical
      • Lower level values lead to higher level values
      • Instrumental ( means) values lead to terminal ( ends) values
      • The more an activity invokes all of one’s values, the greater the motivation!

      • Expertise
      • Competence
      • Justice
      • Fairness

      • This can apply to any context , e.g.

        • Health & fitness
        • Family
        • Personal Growth
    7. Values Clarification Steps:
      • Number the values according to their importance:
        • “Of the values you identified, which is most important?”
        • “Assuming you have (list values already chosen), is ___ or ___ more important to you?”
        • “Assuming you have ___ (list values already chosen), if you couldn't have ___ but you could have ___, would that be OK?”
    8. Values Clarification Steps:
      • Continue numbering the values according to their importance.
      • Rewrite the list of values according to their importance.
      • Assess amount of time currently spent fulfilling values versus desired time
      • Develop action plan to fulfill values
      • Look over the list daily, test all of your pursuits against it!
    9. Summary Points
      • The key is to focus on:
      • What the individual really wants
      • What they care about
      • What uniquely matters to them
      • What this looks like in behaviour
      • What they can do to get some of it now
      • All of these together create a highly motivated client
