An Introduction to Life Role Analysis - Presentation Transcript

    1. Career Consulting Techniques: Life Role Analysis
    2. Opening Discussion
      • Let’s take some time to talk about your experience working with your volunteer client last week.
      • What is vision?
      • What are values?
      • What are beliefs?
    3.
    4. The General Steps to Creating a Portrait
      • Prepare the client for the Self-Portrait by doing preliminary work, e.g.: Develop your relationship with them, clarify your roles, set guidelines, and explain the process.
      • Facilitate the emergence of outcomes and explore meaningfulness.
      • Draw out specific activities that the client wants to undertake to reach outcomes.
      • Identify the skills and knowledge (tools and techniques) the client needs to successfully undertake the above activities.
      • Clean up the Self-Portrait to ensure that it appears in a form suitable to the client.
    5. Determine Meaningfulness & Outcomes
      • Start with the first question. If difficulties arise, go on to one of the following question variations. If resistance or stress occurs, go on to another section altogether, coming back to this section later in the process.
      • In the best of all worlds, what do you want to get out of your life?
      • Let's say your 70 years old and that you've lived your life exactly as you wanted to. Everything has gone your way. I'm 85 by now and I bump into you again. I ask you to tell me about your life. What would you say?
      • Just sit back and relax for a moment... as you feel yourself beginning to relax, I want you to start thinking about doing something that you would enjoy. Just for this moment, take away any barriers, any restrictions, and say to yourself, "If I could be doing anything, anywhere, what would it be?" I'll give you some time to get that picture in your mind... now, describe for me what it is that you are doing.
    6. Completing Values, Beliefs & Interests
      • If any of the sections in the columns under meaningfulness or outcomes are not complete, or if there are difficulties answering any sections, please use the following questions:
      • Values: Why are your outcomes so important to you? For example, why is “X” so important?
      • Beliefs: What sorts of beliefs are leading you toward your goals?
      • Interests: You mentioned a number of things you enjoy doing. Are there any that you really get a kick out of?
    7. Completing Vision / Goals
      • Work Related Outcomes: I know you don’t know exactly what you want to be doing in the “X” business/area, but do you have any ideas regarding how you would like to be involved?
      • Educational: We’ll talk more about this later on, but do you have any educational or training goals?
      • Barriers: Is there anything preventing you from getting the outcomes you have just told me about?
    8. ALL #6: Life Role Analysis
      • Write an analysis stating your thoughts and feelings that you experienced using the process of Life Role Analysis (both as a client and a counsellor). What did you like/dislike about it? What did you learn about yourself from this process? What would you like to develop in yourself in order to increase your effectiveness with this approach? How would you change or modify this method?
      • Please also note that there is a major assignment for this area of the course. Further information will be provided in the next class.
    9. Learning Partner Practice Guidelines
      • Counsellor Goals : To develop rapport. To ask the key questions and facilitate the client's self-awareness and discovery. To ensure you understand what the person is saying and what they mean. To record the information in the client's words on the portrait. Remember, you are doing this process with the client, not to them! Focus on the client’s agenda!
      • Client Goals : Please be yourself, this is a "real play" not a "role play". Allow yourself to fully experience the process for you !
    10. Final Thoughts
      • Any questions or concerns about the material presented tonight?
      • “ To find out what one is fitted to do and to secure an opportunity to do it is the key to happiness.”
      • John Dewey
