"People, places, time. The triumvirate of factors at play in mobile, social, locative services might be familiar at the surface level to designers and developers.

Our relationships to each other, the cities and places we inhabit and navigate have been transformed in the last few years by the technology, products and services that we have designed — but what about that last one of the three — time?

Using examples from the development of Dopplr.com and other services — alongside historical and science-fictional perspectives — Matt will explore what we might call neochronometry and illustrate some directions we could take as interaction designers to treat time as a material."

Nicole Lazzaro, XEODesign
Often ignored by usability, neuroscience now proves that emotion deeply connects decision making and performance. Emotions also coordinate the actions between people. Therefore the next design challenge for desktop and cloud applications is not making a UI "easy," but rather making it more emotional and social. The trick is that emotions and social experiences cannot be designed directly.
This presentation covers how the choices in games craft player emotions to increase engagement. In addition to competition there are game mechanics that increase curiosity and others that create social bonding that makes team work possible. We will examine these 4 Keys to Fun plus new social mechanics from XEODesign’s research to see how successful social media and iPhone games offer more playful interfaces that increase engagement, loyalty, and viral distribution. By adding these kinds of choices designers can drive user behavior to create more engaging experiences.
From XEODesign’s latest player research we will look at:
	•	How games create emotion and self-motivation
	•	What mechanics and emotions drive social engagement, networking, and increase social bonding
	•	How player choices create emotions such as Schadenfreude, Fiero, Curiosity, and Love
	•	The emotions and mechanics that drive viral distribution.

Comparing examples from social media such as Twitter and Facebook to games on the web, console, and iPhone we draw out the secrets of social play and the emotions that makes something viral. Come hear the latest research results on emotions and games played on iPhones and social networks and what that means for more serious applications.

Google Tech Talk: Reconsidering Relevance

We’ve become complacent about relevance. The overwhelming success of web search engines has lulled even information retrieval (IR) researchers to expect only incremental improvements in relevance in the near future. And beyond web search, there are still broad search problems where relevance still feels hopelessly like the pre-Google web.

But even some of the most basic IR questions about relevance are unresolved. We take for granted the very idea that a computer can determine which documents are relevant to a person’s needs. And we still rely on two-word queries (on average) to communicate a user’s information need. But this approach is a contrivance; in reality, we need to think of information-seeking as a problem of optimizing the communication between people and machines.

We can do better. In fact, there are a variety of ongoing efforts to do so, often under the banners of "interactive information retrieval", "exploratory search", and "human computer information retrieval". In this talk, I’ll discuss these initiatives and how they are helping to move "relevance" beyond today’s outdated assumptions.

About the Speaker

He leads Endeca’s efforts to develop features and capabilities that emphasize user interaction. Daniel has spearheaded the annual Workshops on Human Computer Information Retrieval (HCIR) and is organizing the Industry Track for SIGIR ’09. Daniel also publishes The Noisy Channel, a widely read and cited blog that focuses on how people interact with information.

Daniel holds undergraduate degrees in mathematics and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with a minor in psychology.
