Before the advent of modern medicine health care was provided in the home by lay health care providers. In this context, health information provided by almanacs, books, magazines and newspapers played a crucial role as reference material for at-home care providers. Modern medicine turned health care into a profession that required specialized knowledge and skills practiced in institutional settings. Even in this context, health information remained popular, mainly to enable people to self-treat for minor ailments and to take action to prevent health problems in the first place. Now, further technological advances have increased the ability of individuals to once again become more involved in medical self-care. The combination of technological advances coupled with an increased desire by consumers to self-manage their health will disruptively change the health information industry.
