Nice stats, cute visuals. But as always, the real insights and hidden germs are found in the readers' comments. I am very surprised that people feel that it's still important to prove the value of social media, which is what this deck is doing. Admittedly, the fact that you got hundreds of people congratulating you for the deck means that this is in fact a real need. But then again, to quote Tim O'Reilly, the current "innovation" overload is the result of folks who don’t know what true innovation is, trying to pass themselves off as trailblazers. They think something important is going on. They don’t know what it is. They know they’ve got to get some of it.

How crashingly depressing. Notice how none of the reasons stated for giving a fuck had anything to do with actually being a social human being. But I imagine there are swarms of marketing people too socially inept to work out this basic level of understanding for themselves. And the worst thing is that after seeing this trivialization they will think they 'understand' social media and will come creeping into your world trying to have a 'conversation' with you. Yuk.

Agree with Taylor's comment. Many thanks Marta and great work on both versions. The audience I was speaking to yesterday were mostly over 40, up to 80+ I think and all avid learners interested in online communities. It is likely they would have felt excluded and affronted if I had shown them the f**k version. The important thing is to match our communications to our audiences -- if we fail there we may as well be saying f**k you ;) to them. The f**k version would also be a no go in the corporate arena when trying to sell social media to those who control the purse strings.

A lot of people have talked about eliminating the “F@$#”s from the slides, but nobody has asked if they help the presentation. I’m going to take the minority viewpoint that they DO indeed help the presentation. There is a style of presentation that the “F@$#”s help advance. I’ve noticed around my office that the older employees are the ones that are offended by it. I think that this demonstrates how the language of communication among younger people is different than older people. The whole point of the video is to get into the communication systems that people are using today, and if you are going to do it, you’re going to have to use the language of that system. John

Hey Bambi I'm hearing what you say and in many respects I’m in agreement. There's nothing new about a lot of PR and the softer stuff in particular being extremely hard/impossible to measure. Intangibles are intangible. I mean how do you value a round of golf and bottle of Scotch at Christmas? And yes, you’ve got to hope that those eyeballs come good. Sure, everything you do, every penny you spend through SMM or any form of marketing and advertising will 'hopefully, lead to a yield,’ somewhere down the line. People seem to want to have it both ways though. If you’re going to come out and say ‘measure’ your SMM (as this presentation and countless others do), then please, help me out here – show me how you’d show the value? Share with me how you identify the quality and the effect of the noise. Honestly, this isn’t a trick. I want to be as good as I can in this field, to learn as much as possible. I want to know what the ‘thought leaders’ do or at least propose to do. That’s why I referred to the Olivier Blanchard F.R.Y stuff – it may be useful it may not. At least he’s acknowledging value and ROI and the real life stuff and proposing something. If you can’t measure the value of SMM, if you think it’s not possible, as we agree is the case in much traditional PR, then fine. Maybe, even despite the digitisation of SMM, it’s still not possible to measure its effect. If that’s the case then so be it. If people simply don’t know how to do it or whether it’s possible at all, then again that’s fine too. I do realise that admitting ‘sorry I don’t know’, especially when it comes to SMM, is a tough call. Everybody seems desperate to present themself as an expert. Sorry, but if people claim SMM to be measurable then (because I don’t know how to do it) I’m bound to ask ‘how?’ – same as a client might. To tell them they ‘don’t get it’ because they ask for a claim to be backed up doesn’t make sense to me.

Thanks Marta. Not a wasted pic or word. I suspect that some of the people who want irrefutable proof, case studies, and a stack of spread sheets to show that this stuff works are the same guys who get terribly excited and glassy eyed when the agency suggests a TVC and invites them to attend the shoot - without holding it up to the same standards. There is a place for the 'old' stuff - the yack-at-them model - as well as the new. And surely it depends on your objectives. The particular blend of your marketing needs to be created based on your customers, your product and your aims. It may be that Social Media just aint the thing for you...But it doesn't mean that it's not valid. There are far too many (primarily small but I have witnessed this with leaders of major corporations) biz operators out there who think that Advertising is Marketing; and that all this social media stuff can't be valid because...it's called Social! How can they get their head around new marketing initiatives when it has been in the interest of media sales reps not to correct them over the years as to their misconceived ideas, skewed thinking and unrealistic expectations of old marketing and traditional media. To Martin who asks why the boss or client should care about 'social mentions' or followers, which I suspect he suggests because it cannot be directly traced to a direct sales - why is this any different to any brand advertising activity? Validation of a traditional media buy is often 'eyeballs', reach and frequency. So, X followers on twitter or fans on facebook....Eyeballs and potentially a mouth? People who at some point noticed you - and perhaps even went on to converse, which depending on your overall strategy and the full mix of your activity and its effectiveness in marketing your product will, hopefully, lead to a yield.

The old mindset of one-way marketing messages always seems to shine through in the comments calling for measurement and ROI of social web marketing. This tells me that many have still not realized that the days of control over brand and message are gone, and gone for good. Markets are conversations was first mentioned ten years ago and that's what they have become. The effectiveness of monitoring and participating in that conversation taking place permanently, however, cannot be measured with the old tools of yesterday's media. This latest phase of the participatory web is still relatively new and appropriate tools in development. The number of studies that show brands engaging in the social web having performed better than their peers are just now being published. More will surely follow. So, to all who wish to measure weight with a yardstick, I say hang in there and follow the early "hippies" as they show how this all works.

Passionate stuff, but I have to share Steve Walker's reservations, especially when it comes to measurement. People band about the term measurement but never define it. What are you measuring, why and how? Why should your boss or potential client care when you start talking about 'social mentions' or more followers or whatever other metric you arbitrarily choose as proof of SMM success? All they really want to know is how much money their new marketing investment will yield. What are you going to do to show this and assign genuine value (or otherwise) to all the other stuff? Olivier Blanchard offers his F.R.Y. metrics - http://thebrandbuilder.wordpress.com/2009/05/22/real-social-media-r-o-i-part-4-fry-metrics/ - interesting reading, and at least it takes a hearder nosed and more realistic approach to SMM than all the hippy stuff guffing around the place the moment. Don't get me wrong, I'm a believer. But isn't it time for some considered clarity and when it comes to value, to worth and to how best conversations, touch and SMM can be properly measured?

In my view, social media enables rich conversations on the topics that really matter- like who's running for office- and also those that don't - like what Oprah's having for lunch. We engage in - listen to - laugh at - contemplate what's shared in these conversations. Lots of alternative views and opinions are shared in the process. Sometimes we take action - sometimes we change our POV. Sometimes we just forget about it - but we enjoy the experience and come back for more. "Old media" doesn't work that way. And- well, us "stupid" people really like all the pretty colors and cool videos and stuff on YouTube and Facebook. It makes us buy stuff.

This is a striking and positive presentation. It also made me really cross, because it has more than its fair share of the hype and woolly thinking that so often surrounds social media these days. Reading through it gave rise to the following thoughts: 1. 'So many people are using social media,' it is asserted. Therefore, one would expect that a suitable proportion of these people in marketing departments would understand social media. They don't (it is also asserted). The two statements are directly conflicting, unless it is a global criterion for entry into a marketing department that you don't engage in social media. 2. Social media sites, we are told, are more popular than e-mail. By 'popular' I am assuming that the measurement criterion is 'time spent on'. So of course social media sites are more popular - because they waste so much of your time. E-mail may be old-fashioned. But as a way of communicating, it's exceedingly efficient and well-targeted compared to the vast majority of social media. Oh, and by the way, I use Twitter and Facebook and Plaxo and LinkedIn and Wikis and Blogs and any number of social network sites. And how do you think I find out when someone's said something interesting on any of 'em? Yeah, that's right - I get the sites to send me an e-mail. My e-mail is my portal and filter on social media and social networking. 3. Social media is like word of mouth on steroids. Word of mouth on steroids is babble. Related point, from the Seth Godin quote slide - if every person has their own personal media platform, then you have six billion platforms. That's babble, not any kind of sensible communication in the business world. 4. 93% of social media users believe a company should have a social media presence. Sound impressive? Let me hit you with a more impressive statistic. I assert that 100% of non-social media users believe that it doesn't matter a hoot whether a company has a social media presence. I haven't researched that, but I am prepared to bet that research will back me up. Stats from a self-selected audience are worthless. 5. The most sensible slide in the presentation was #72 - 'Social Media is not everything'. Thank goodness for that shaft of sunlight. 6. The slide that says 'Measure' sounds great. But measure what? There are plenty of ways of understanding the quantity of noise there is about your company, your products or whatever. I have not yet seen one single credible method of understanding or measuring the effect of that noise. So taking a sensible and useful measure is, as far as I can tell, impracticable without spending inconveniently large amounts of money on research. (Oh, and please design the research properly, will you?) As an active participant in social media, I can see their attraction. And I can see that it's a virgin field pregnant with possibilities for PR and marketing agencies all over the place to gull clients into spending vast amounts of money on something that can't actually be measured. [That metaphor was deliberately mixed, by the way] The first thing organisations should do is to spend some time understanding the realities of social media as it applies to their specific marketplace. For B2B, B2C and public sector you have three vastly different dynamics of communication. And, right now, social media has only a small (albeit growing) role to play. Please stop saying that it's has taken over the world. It f**king well hasn't, not yet.

There seems to be an error on slide #40 about the amount of money raised by the Obama campaign via online donations. According to an article in the Washington Post, '3 million donors made a total of 6.5 million donations online adding up to more than $500 million.' Though this number refers to the entire 21-months campaign and not just the year 2008, the $6.5 million in 2008 mentioned in slide #40 is probably off by an order of magnitude or two. @Helge I guess Apple's success is an inherited social media way of doing things: Creating products a market needs (not an engineer wants), supporting a community (online or offline - long time ago), providing the foundation for co-creation (iPhone Apps) and on and on and on. Twitter is only one way to communicate - but even that doesn't do anything if you don't THINK DIFFERENT - rings a bell ;-) 50 years ago computers helped people who were less organized to actually keep up with the well organized. Social media is a way to help the less social and less customer centric (even so everybody wholeheartedly believes they are customer centric) to keep up with the few who are customer centric by design. However, an endorsement from a Twitter 'friend' is not necessarily received as WOM; especially if the person really isn't a friend. The bottom line is this: Social Media is a tool. It joins Television, Radio, Pony Express, Smoke Signals, Post it Notes, Flyers, Text, Bluetooth, Outdoor, Cave Drawings, Tattoos, Letters, Cable, Satellite Radio, Sign Language, CB, Mobile, etc. as forms of media that humans create to communicate. Each is unique. None replaces another, or causes any other form of media to become obsolete. But as each form comes into existence, a cadre of hypsters often emerges to over-hype the new media and make overstated claims. Sometimes they call themselves evangelists or consultants. I've found a few on this thread. My recommendation to the current wave of hypsters is to play it cool. Consider what you're saying. It's true that there is real utility and value in social media. As such, the hype isn't necessary. At best the hype discredits the message and the messenger when it is found to be misleading.

In response to skeptics who've commented: The actual numbers, ie: 78% & 14% may not be accurate, but what is fundamental truth here is that people, that is YOU & I, will listen to and act upon advice/information which comes from a "trusted source" rather than listen to any adverstising. Nothing is stronger than Word of Mouth [WOM]. As an example, let's say there's a new movie out. This new movie has some well-known stars who you happen to like, and is one of your favourite genres. You also happen to have a few good friends who share the same movie tastes as you that have seen the movie. Before inviting another friend out to what you hope will be a great night at the movies , what do you do? Chances are you call them to find out whether it's worth spending your money to see the flick. What if instead of a movie we're speaking about a pricy new restaurant. Or a trip down South and you're trying to decide which hotel to stay at. Do you listen to the advertising or to friends who's sampled the goods and can tell it like it is because they're not on anyone's payroll? The more expensive the purchase, the more likely you are to consult your "trusted advisors" before going ahead with your plans. But what if you don't have any friends who own that new car you're thinking about buying or who have visited that exotic land you want to visit? Just log in to Twitter or a site like TripAdvisor [to name but two] and within a very short time you'll have information to help you make the right choice at any time of the day or night and without having left the comfort of your home. In fact, you may even [or most probably!] discover things you hadn't even thought about asking but which happen to be critical to the decision you're about to make! Some social networks enable you to feel the pulse of a nation [even of the world at large] in real time - perhaps not for everything, but for many things of importance. Hence the invevitable power of Social Media. They enable people around the globe to know what's happening and what others are thinking so much faster than could be imagined a few years ago. Examples of this are the Obama campaign which recently took place and the AIG scandal. Greater awareness not only helps people make more informed decisions, but also helps mobilise people into action. The power of Social Media and it's impact on business and everyday lives has yet to be explored fully. Those who choose to ignore this choose to live in the past.

Needless to say, I'm highly skeptical of the "14% trust advertising" assertion. I'll take a look at the book you mention. It wasn't listed as a source in the presentation. The Nielson report that was listed as a source states that 55% trust advertising in the US. 49% in trust advertising in the UK. That's quite a bit different than 14%. Honesty is very important in all communications, not just social media. But it's especially ironic in this instance because you make that point that you shouldn't f**k with people, and include the quote "any blog that spins the truth will be found out. in a world of social media honesty is the only policy." So please tell me, what's wrong with the Nielson numbers? Why did you contradict a listed source? Are the Nielson #s wrong? Did Nielson lie? Or are you F**king with people and spinning the truth?

After some research, I've found the following statistics to be factually inaccurate: -14% trust advertisements -Only 18% of TV campaigns generate positive ROI -90% of viewers skip commercials Quite ironic that an argument hinging on the integrity of social media versus traditional media is based on inaccurate and misleading data. It looks like the author just lifted phony stats from the sales materials of a South African creative team: http://www.creativeoutsource.co.za/brandcon.htm. Nice one. Was this intentional? Is this just a prank? Regardless, it's pretty funny. But to set the record straight, the Nielson study on consumer trust in advertising (which, oddly enough, the author actually referenced as a data source) shows 55% of US consumers trust advertising. Compare that to the 32% of consumers who trust bloggers' opinions on products and services (if you can believe the author on that stat). Looks like consumers trust advertising far more than they trust bloggers. I can see why.

FAIL. Makes the exact same error that every other member of the OMG Social Media XD XD hivemind makes. 1) People have never trusted advertising, or claimed to be affected by it, but despite this there are thousands of case studies to show it works. 2) Conversations existed before the internet, dumbass, that's why people have mouths and ears. The only difference is they're happening in a different place. 3) Just because people occasionally mention brands on social networks does not mean that you can use that to effectively market your brand. 4) Pointing at a site and saying "starbucks uses social media" is NOT a case study. A case study has proven, quantifiable results. There are NO social media case studies.

However presentation could have focused more on the latter half which has some very good action steps to tap into social media. First half just tells us that social media is big which is not news. A problem here is that you insult and offend the people you want to convert. Makes or chummy in-crowd closures, but it's not an effective way to change the things you want changed. "Messages are not conversations," indeed ... but then neither are screaming slides you have to asterisk out!
