Really like slide 25 – lists 3 things to measure, something I’ve been looking at in my own work. In the absence of the media industry’s metric magic of media impressions we’ve had to find a framework for measuring non-paid for media. The issue is that the different channels, campaigns and ways you use them can all throw off different metrics and have different results. In order to create some kind of uniformity I’ve been working with three broad categories of metrics; Coverage: who sees it in what numbers Engagement: what do they do with it Action: what business or marketing objective is being met. As a simple example I set up the framework for my own blog as a way of exploring this: http://www.burning-head.com/index.php/2009/08/a-measurement-framework-for-the-burning-head-blog/ As non-traditional media (media with non-industry-standard measures) grows we are going to have to work out a way of planning, reporting and optimizing it. Would be very interested to hear your thoughts on this structure as a starter for ten.

RE: Slide 23 Maslows hierarchy of needs is adapted across all levels of a social network, not just the last couple. While physiological transcribes as sustainablility of identity (I blog therefore I am), there are numerous ways that members connect for health, or security benefits. Interesting, no? :) And at the end, moving from respondent to creator ensure we achieve a measure of self actualization too! Cheers :)

I think that this is a great video. I recently wrote about the same subject in my blog. I think that companies need to ask themselves five qualifying questions to see if they have the opportunity to generate revenue by fostering an online social network: Do you act as a broker of goods or services? Do you provide content or advice to a significant percentage of a specific industry or consumer segment? Are you facing new competitors who generate revenue by aggregating audience around your content or by providing meta-content? Do you have data or knowledge within your organization that is obscure to your clients? Do you serve an audience that is highly fragmented? Very nice mapping of revenue models. I was moderating a panel on social media in Nov.08 and "social gaming" was seen as the savior of SNS - with avatars in the mix for good balance.

ISPs can't control the flow of information because peer to peer telecomms (customers creating mesh networks) will mean each consumer is an ISP themselves. A network of kids passing traffic back and forward in the layer ABOVE the ISP. Non-monitorable.

Hi, interesting. But you've missed out 1/3 of the reason what ppl do on a social network - Finding and Sharing. Within the context of Social Search anyway. Tagging and Social News make a lot more sense within the context of discoverability if you analyse the relationship between Digg etc and say, Facebook "Posted Items". Even on Slideshare we Search for relevant user generated content and then Share them with embeds. Hope this helps :)

Thank you for this. The only thing I would suggest is show an evolution of transparency vis a vis online communities since the earliest ones in the 1970s-80's. Things have changed substantially since the wild days of NNTP Newsgroups. As blogs are often a one-to-many mechanism and less a many-to-many, distinguish clearly the owner/blogger responsibilities to transparency versus the community responsibilities. Still, an excellent and clear preso.
