La catedral es un templo cristiano, donde tiene sede o cátedra el obispo, siendo así la iglesia principal de cada diócesis. La sede o cátedra episcopal es el lugar desde donde cada obispo preside y guía a su grey, enseñando, desde el servicio a la comunidad, la vida de fe y la doctrina de la Iglesia. Catedral deriva del griego καθέδρα (cathedra) que se traduce como asiento y se refiere a la presencia de la silla o trono del obispo o arzobispo. Las catedrales surgieron como una nueva construcción, o como la evolución de una primigenia iglesia monacal elevada al estatus de catedral. Al principio, en el interior de las catedrales se impartían cátedras a todo tipo de estudiantes pero especialmente a los seminaristas, referentes a Teología, Gramática y Latín. ]]>
