Web search engines like Google have made us all smarter by providing ready access to the world's knowledge whenever we need to look up a fact, learn about a topic or evaluate opinions. The W3C's Semantic Web effort aims to make such knowledge more accessible to computer programs by publishing it in machine understandable form.

As the volume of Semantic Web data grows software agents will need their own search engines to help them find the relevant and trustworthy knowledge they need to perform their tasks. We will discuss the general issues underlying the indexing and retrieval of RDF based information and describe Swoogle, a crawler based search engine whose index contains information on over a million RDF documents.

We will illustrate its use in several Semantic Web related research projects at UMBC including a distributed platform for constructing end-to-end use cases that demonstrate the semantic web’s utility for integrating scientific data. We describe ELVIS (the Ecosystem Location Visualization and Information System), a suite of tools for constructing food webs for a given location, and Triple Shop, a SPARQL query interface which searches the Semantic Web for data relevant to a given query ELVIS functionality is exposed as a collection of web services, and all input and output data is expressed in OWL, thereby enabling its integration with Triple Shop and other semantic web resources.

Introduces "Slug" a web crawler (or "Scutter") designed for harvesting semantic web content. Implemented in Java using the Jena API, Slug provides a configurable, modular framework that allows a great degree of flexibility in configuring the retrieval, processing and storage of harvested content. The framework provides an RDF vocabulary for describing crawler configurations and collects metadata concerning crawling activity. Crawler metadata allows for reporting and analysis of crawling progress, as well as more efficient retrieval through the storage of HTTP caching data.

Rhizomer is a generic semantic metadata browser and editor. It is based on “classic” HTML paradigms (table, form, etc.) in order to provide an easy and accessible user experience. For end-users, it looks like the web pages they are used to deal with. However, the semantics that lay behind are used to improve the user experience through an AJAX-enhanced web interface. The user interface is fed by a metadata storage abstraction layer, which offers a SPARQL endpoint and implements the DESCRIBE SPARQL primitive in order to improve the usability of the resulting metadata fragments. The metadata component is combined with a wiki engine that helps managing the content intended for human consumption. Altogether, both components build a simple yet powerful platform for Semantic Web portals.

Presented May 24, 2007 at the Semantic Technology Conference This talk describes an effort at Logos Research Systems to build a semantic knowledgebase encompassing general background information about entities and relationships from the Bible (one of the world's most popular collections of information). The scope includes people, places, belief systems, ethnic attributes, social roles, as well as family and other inter-personal relationships, places visited, etc. This Bible Knowledgebase (BK) will be used to support knowledge discovery and visualization in both desktop and web-server configurations for Logos' products. It will also provide an integration framework for Logos' substantial digital library (more than 7000 titles from over 100 different publishers). The project is a good example of what it takes to move a real-world, knowledge-intensive application into a Semantic Web framework.

Web Semantico: da XHTML a RDF in 3 click propone una via molto semplice per entrare nel Semantic Web senza fatica. Dopo una brevissima introduzione al concetto di Web Semantico vedremo come creare con un click un hCalendar (Microformat per gli eventi), convertirlo in RDF/XML tramite un XSL con GRDDL (una nuova tecnologia del W3C che permette di estrarre RDF) e utilizzare i dati ottenuti come desideriamo (Storage, Timeline, Grafo o altro).
