This tutorial will give you the tools to uncover user needs and design the context for delivering information, whether that be through search, taxonomies or something entirely different.

What you will learn:

    * A broadly applicable method for understanding user needs in diverse information access contexts
    * A collection of information retrieval patterns relevant to multiple settings such as enterprise search and information access, service design, and product and platform management

We will also discuss the impact of organizational and cultural factors on design decisions and why it is essential, that you frame business and technology challenges in the right way.

The tutorial builds on lessons learned from a large customer project focusing on transforming user experience. The scope of this program included ~25 separate web-delivered products, a large document repository, integrated customer service and support processes, content management, taxonomy and ontology creation, and search and information retrieval solutions.

Joe will share the innovate methods and surprising insight that emerged in the process.

It was real, it was (sometimes) up to date, even if it was also inevitably dry, dense and tabular, and was often only there to be looked at. Those of us making web sites then didn’t have too many data presentation options; our challenge was usually just to make it as clean and fast loading as possible.

How we have moved on! These days, the web browser is a window onto a sea of rich data. Now, we expect to be able to understand it, personalise how we view it, add our own input to it and transact with it. At the same time, the volume of what is available threatens to overwhelm us. In short, the User Experience of data has changed completely.

Public and private sector organisations are increasingly willing and able to expose aspects of their data both internally and externally, and are using the web as a key channel to do so. Looking internationally we are starting to see pressure on governments to ‘open source’ key data holdings to allow organisations, community groups and individuals to re-use it creatively and in ways that government owners would never imagine. The reality is that User Experience designers and Information Architects are more and more likely to be dealing regularly with the challenges of rich data presentation.

This talk examines some approaches to the analysis and presentation of rich data sets on the web.

Drawing on the presenter’s own direct experiences from large scale projects in the pharmaceutical, educational, aged care and consumer advocacy sectors.

This is not surprising, as the early days of the web were about making sites that supported the interaction between people and data. The obvious model back then was a library; a library is a space for humans to receive knowledge. But with the rise of social networks, and the integration of community into almost all online experiences, more architecture practices are directly transferable to design. Online spaces are no longer just about findability, but about falling in love, getting your work done, goofing around, reconnecting with old friends, staving off loneliness... humans doing human things.

As an early Information Architect who had been working in the search field, I found very little but entertainment from phenomenology’s Gaston Bachelard or innovator Frank Gehry. But once I began working on social spaces, it all changed. We all know Christopher Alexander from his pattern-language approach to codifying design solutions, but if you go beyond the mere structure you find that in those patterns lies the answers to tricky privacy issues and the cold-start problem. Architects of buildings can help us form a new approach to the architecture of human spaces online. Poetics will go down easy with plenty of real world examples from current websites, shanty villages, air apps and cityscapes.

Visual Modeling Within UCD (English)

A deep understanding of end-users is key to effective development. Visual modeling helps transforming these requirements efficiently into a common understanding of the system and leverage communication between stakeholders. Complementary models provide a comprehensive view on the system from an end-user perspective and serve as a basis for easy-to-use UIs.

Holger Deist studied Industrial Design with focus on system design and human factors. After stops in product concept development and marketing he worked as an information architect and usability consultant for interactive agencies responsible for research and conceptual design of e.g. intranets, online shops and online banking platforms. He joined SAP Germany in 2005 as a usability & design consultant and moved to the Research, Standards & Methods team of SAP User Experience in 2007.

Dr. Wolfgang Teusch studied Mathematics and has a Ph.D. in Economics. He worked as an assistant professor in the department of Economics and Social Sciences. In 1985 he moved to SAP and worked as developer in controlling and funds management. As development manager for funds management he co-founded the IBU Public Sector in 1994. He worked in sales for two years and since 2002 he is solution manager for Records and Case Management.

Visual Modeling in UCD (Deutsch)

KURZBESCHREIBUNG:
