A few short years ago, communications applications required millions of dollars, teams of highly skilled engineers, access to networks, and many months of time. Telephony Mashups rewrite that equation, and make it possible to blend communications services into applications quickly and easily. In this workshop, led by 2007 O'Reilly Mashup Winner Thomas Howe, we look at how these mashups are created, and at the implementation details in depth. Using After Hours Doctor's Office as an example, every part of the mashup will be reviewed in code-level detail, including a Voice XML front end, the software interfaces to the Amazon Mechanical Turk nurses, and mapping displays to help direct the patient to a local health care facility. The attendees will leave with a good understanding of the technology and effort required to write their own compelling application.

They are designing for and facilitating important online activities like communication, collaboration, sharing and socializing. However, it’s hard to know how users are really interacting with websites. They can’t easily observe users in their natural environments interacting with these systems. How many web developers actually get a focus group of target users in a room and watch them navigate their websites? We’re obsessed with helping developers build better user experiences on the web, and we knew there had to be a better, cheaper and faster way than traditional usability testing.

Agile methodologies like Extreme Programming and Scrum, focus on short development cycles, accelerated feedback from users and customers, and incremental delivery. On the technical side these approaches can bring discipline and predictability to short release cycles. But can these incremental methodologies incorporate successful design techniques? Using case studies and examples from their own project experience, Alex and Leslie will discuss how to integrate design and Agile, discussing what works, what problems arise, and most importantly, the changes in mindset that are necessary on an integrated Agile design/implementation team.
