Together with Carol Perryman (MSLIS, TRLN Doctoral Fellow at School of Information & Library Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) Guus van den Brekel (Coördinator Electronic Services of the Central Medical Library at University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands), is working in a Grant-funded project: "Providing Consumer Health Outreach and Library Programs to Virtual World Residents in Second Life". HealthInfo Island ,which is the home of the Consumer Health Library, the SL Medical Library and NLM/SIS, wants to be a central point in SL for health and medical information and is investigating possible ways of further cooperation with other health and medical non-profit organizations. One of the main targets for the project is to reach out to all Support Groups in Second Life. A brief summary of our findings about working in a virtual environment like Second Life and some future developments is included, as well as an overview of health, educational, clinical, medical related activities in Second Life. It contains a strong plea for a focus shift for librarians, a focus into the environments where the users are, instead of expecting them come to us, or our resources. Exploration of all relevant user environments for you organization, the use of new web-based technologies with Web 2.0 elements and certainly a more structural technical re-design of library information systems is needed to deliver library services and resources at the place of need. Examples of short term possibilities are shown (i.e. Library Toolbar), as well as more long-term solutions clarified by examples from the Libraries of the University of Groningen and the Central Medical Library of the University Medical Center Groningen.

In order to inform and to educate medical staff, librarians in health care institutions have to work with various types of interfacing With open access electronic services and medical databases expand daily, with all information about new achievements in medicine. Medical library resources keep growing. Searchers cannot always see and find the needed information and decide on relevancy of information found. Medical librarians have to help them for quick search. The Quick Search Library Toolbar was set up by Guus van den Brekel, Coordinator of Electronic services in Central Medical Library University of Groningen (NL), with free Software available on Internet from Conduit Network. Since it was proven to be very successful, cooperation was initiated between NCRC library and Guus van Brekel to develop a similar toolbar available for NCRC Library. The "NCRC Biblioteka Toolbar" links you quickly to all data resources available to NCRC and makes them available to the users in one click.software between the users of libraries and the constantly growing knowledge databases.
