  • To a certain extent the technology chosen should be irrelevant, however, with all the systems we’ve investigated and used it’s clear that, although pedagogy should drive technology, sometimes compromises have to made due to the limitations of various systems. E.g LiveMeeting had issues with Macs and will not work in the NHS.
  • The JISC RSC have been invaluable in helping us to overcome problems and move forwards with using DL over this academic year. We’ve worked closely with Dan McCaffrey to successfully run several online sessions with a group of widely distributed Clin Ed students using both Macs and PCs and some working within the NHS.our ClinEd colleagues become more competent at running online sessions and it’s been a very rewarding experience. Once the initial technical issues were sorted out we tended to step back as much as possible while remaining vigilant in the case of any problems. Gentle reminders were made and accepted now and then e.g. for the presenter to pay attention to some comments or questions in the chat window. Help was always there from Dan at JISC and that was invaluable in helping us support our academic colleague. It’s interesting that at some points the flow of conversation transcended the technical barriers. I’ve included a screenshot here to show a point within one session where it’s clear that there is a mix of responses and posture....I’m fascinated to watch how people in an online group interact. One thing we’re all agreed on is that the video component adds an important extra dimension to the online experience.

  • Feedback from Alex….• Technical issues aside, once we had the best setup we could achieve what were the positive benefits of being able to take part in the RHC sessions from a distance?• Was it useful to be able to ask and answer questions rather than just observe/listen?• Was there a sense of joining the RHC community?• Has he had any contact beyond the session with any of the group?• Given the frustration of being cut off at times would he prefer not to have had any contact at all or was it all worth it?!
  • • Was there a sense of joining the RHC community? Yes, it was very useful to be able to ask/answer questions and he felt he took part in the sessions really well. He even answered questions about tropical medicine altho was accused of using google to do it! (not so….did tropical medicine before polar)• Has he had any contact beyond the session with any of the group? No…feels a bit lost since not able to access EMILY
  • • Was is all worth it?• Yes, “Had a great week, missed some of the best lectures when signal went down but it was brilliant to benefit from the DL sessions”• Suggestions?• Would be great to have all the PPTs etc in advance and then interact but not need to have all the downloading of the slides and images etc
  • next steps now we’ve broken the ice?– confidence has grown in our ability to:- • manage more students at once • manage time differences and technical limitations • help other colleagues become competent online moderators and facilitators– Peninsula (Plymouth) PG mission will continue to aim at extending the DL provision– we look forwards to supporting the next exciting stage of development as we expand the DL provision within PUPSMD
