  • Im PK from Student Services within OU. Brief from Alex An overview of how you provide student support, and recent issues/problems/solutions would be really interesting for our group, I think – maybe 30-40 minutes presenting with 20-30 discussion? How does that sound? Happy to be interrupted
  • Just to give a sense of numbers: 200,000 UK students Supported from Milton Keynes plus 10 English regional centres and in Wales, Scotland and Ireland Use 350 venues for tutorials Employ over 7000 associate lecturers – tutors – mostly work for other institutions
  • Give sense of operating at scale 2million contacts a year from enquirers and students
  • Over HALF students don’t have 2 A levels or equivalent – lots of funding for widening participation – future unknown
  • Under 25s are now QUARTER of OU new student body – 5000 in schools
  • What matters to students is Quality of STUDY MATERIALS Quality of their TUTOR
  • This is deceptively simple but have found the model of a student journey really helpful to track the student experience through from first enquiry to completion of study and affiliation. Used for marketing purposes and also for student support
  • Focus on 9 key areas Aims, Objectives, Main activities, Services standards – specific targets for turnaround which are measured Also internal survey work, evaluation, commissioned research. Practitioners involved in developing this, meet 3 times a year, review and amend
  • For OU – the elearning technologies offer lots of potential. We’re doing things that many students, especially younger students are comfortable with – probably lagging behind them
