  • 20,000 “experiments” or “tests” in 2010 Potential changes to the search algorithm are on a small selection of users. It could be you! You are not asked or told about the test – your search is automatically directed to the “sandbox”. This is sometimes why your results may suddenly change unexpectedly. Google monitors your response along with the responses of all the other testers. If they are “favourable” then the change to the algorithm is rolled out globally. If testers spend too much time scrolling down the page trying to find relevant results or are having to alter the search too many times, the algorithm change is rejected and your searches go back to being run on the normal servers. 19/11/12 (c) Karen Blakeman 2012

Search Engine Land http://searchengineland.com/ and Search Engine Watch http://searchenginewatch.com/ are both aimed at search engine optimisation but they watch the search engines, and in particular Google, like hawks. They are often the first to pick up changes to Google’s search algorithms and changes that Google does not mention in its own blogs. Phil Bradley's weblog http://philbradley.typepad.com/ . An excellent source of news on what is happening in search and what’s new.
