  3. 3. Facebook Issues Lack of security Learning too much about students Students learning too much about teachers Legal responsibility Q Debate - 2010-12-27
  4. 4. Edmodo Edmodo is a FB alternative that is teacher controlled. Safe, closed network Free Online discussions Digital 'Agenda' for students and parents Easy to make groups Polls, notes, assignments, calendars, etc all in one place Self marking quizzes
  5. 5. Edmodo Double-click to enter text
  6. 6. Edmodo Top -- Calendar, Grades Library Post: Note, Alert, Assignment, Quiz, Poll

  10. 10. Comparison Edmodo Advantages Organized help sections Accessing grades anywhere on the site Reward badges to students Built-in calendars Straight-forward and user-friendly Step-by-step help for new users Students see groups and can connect Access codes for parent tracking Direct parent-teacher communication
  11. 11. Comparison Edmodo Disadvantages Few features and resources Students give their parents the access codes Doesn't seem professional Limited features for student activities No attendance Limited options for creating quizzes Difficulty trying to connect with teachers within the school
  12. 12. Comparison Schoology Advantages Attendance records Easier to delete accounts Ability to post comments/documents when providing feedback Time limit options Updates Templates for classes Google compatible: conference/edit with students and collaborative work
  13. 13. Comparison Schoology Advantages Direct contact with teachers Album/galleries of pictures More parts - a bigger learning system Blogging/class discussions Easier to add clubs and groups Students see multiple classes/groups/messages in one place from multiple teachers Ability to create multiple courses and folders
  14. 14. Comparison Schoology Disadvantages Help section requires using a search box Grades accessed only through home page Learning styles and preferences not included when creating student profiles Having to import Calendars Codes for students are too long Hard to navigate quiz and attendance pages Requires too much time to learn the system, frustrating More sophisticated and challenging than Edmodo Cannot monitor student messaging
  15. 15. Conclusions? There are good alternatives to Facebook Students will use them Teachers are more in control and 'protected' Admin features seldom mesh well with school admin systems
