CRM is Customer Resource Management (doesn’t have to be based on customers). The focus of this presentation is on things that there is usually a cost for but are free or very low cost for non-profits.
Some of the savings have been on the scale of 1/20 th (or better) of retail. There are additional savings that are not included on this slide. They will be mentioned later.
A full list is too long for a presentation like this. Go to techsoup.org/stock for a listing and full descriptions and restrictions. The forum is at http://forum.techsoup.org
A crucial item to be aware of is that Microsoft limits you to 5 “titles” and 50 copies per title every 2 years. If you are buying a server operating system from them, they require user or device licenses. That’s 2 towards the limit. After 2 years, you can order more titles. Almost all the other organizations that you can order from allow one order per year.
After the two year period, you can still install or reinstall the products you ordered or that you got via Software Assurance. Software Assurance expiring just means that after two years, any new versions will not be a free upgrade.
Windows 7 will be coming out for the public on October 22, 2009. It is available for those with Software Assurance as of August 6th.
At this point in time, you should be considering Windows 7 as Microsoft will extend support for Windows XP for only so long.
Windows 7 Enterprise is not available at retail; however it is identical to the Ultimate version, which is $320 retail and $220 upgrade.
The Office 2007 Pro Plus version is not available at retail. When Office 2007 came out, we got 12 copies for free due to SA.
This was in 2006. Now, it’s better to get SBS 2008 or Windows Server 2008 64-bit.
If you have more users than devices, get the Device package. If you have more devices than users, get the User package. You can mix them; however, they count towards the 5 titles limit.
Cannot get retail version without licenses. No longer available on TechSoup. Now called System Center Configuration Manager 2007 ($52 with SA; User/Device licenses $2/each; Server licenses $6 or $17). Not recommended for use by non-techies.
Can order Cisco products once a year. Any non-Cisco items must be ordered separately so they are not subject to the Cisco processing delay. Libraries are not included (as well as many other types of organizations; best to check the website as the list is too long).
SharePoint Designer 2007 is now free and succeeded by Expression Web 2 for $12. Dreamweaver 8.0 is now CS 4.0 and is $35 by Adobe.
Remember, prices are as of 2007 and cost of Software Assurance and shipping/handling, etc. are not included. With TechSoup, they’re all included except for S/H of SA materials.
Instead of paying the $54, one could have just downloaded the software and burned them to a couple of discs.
Spent 1/20 th the retail cost.
Spent 1/23 rd the retail cost.
The + in the “Retail cost” column means that the cost listed is the least possible and likely would cost more. The + in the “Savings” column means that savings would be at least that.
Create and share documents without managing attachments.
Integration is one of the pain points when dealing with software.
Normally $10.95/month. Options: $5.95/month (if paid 10 years in advance); $9.95/mo for 1 year; $8.95/mo for 2 years; $7.95/mo for 3 years; $6.95/mo for 5 years. They have over 1500 servers, a state-of-the-art data center, and a full time staff of 70 at last count.
Uses Moniker.com for domain registration. TierraNet for web hosting.
Uses a web site builder called Doodlekit (uses the simple plan, usually $14/month). Ability to integrate RSS feeds, blogs, and searching. Allows for up to 30 pages to your website, 1000 of your own uploaded photos (bulk uploader), and 50,000 maximum hits per month. The thing to watch out for is the 30 page limit.
Language translation is currently available in 15 major foreign languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Greek, Swedish, Arabic, Chinese [Traditional and Simplified], Japanese, Korean and Russian. Uses WorldLingo.com
Free two-hour telephone consultation on specific SEO goals and possible techniques to implement. There’s also a guide and forum.
Pairings last one school semester (three months). Applications are accepted in December (for spring program), and July (for fall programs). 8-10 nonprofits are selected each round. Each nonprofit is paired with two or three students. Pairings include biweekly meetings (phone or in-person, depending on nonprofit location) and 60-90 hours of consulting work (per project).
Remember, it’s only free for one year.
Consider using K9 Web filtering tool instead.

Some of the reasons for resistance can be quite valid. Some technologies can be overkill, out of place, or difficult to use. Small print can be a deal breaker. Watch out for new terms when deals end or renew.
