  4. 4. Leader - 10 blind spotsWe all have blind spots - even the best & greatestof leaders• Unproductive behaviors• That are invisible to us• Are glaring to everyone else• Create dire consequences for you, your team, and your companyWe advice for recognizing and overcoming them. Making earth little softer
  5. 5. Going it aloneThe symptoms:• Rejecting offers of support• Withdrawing /Isolating from others• Shouldering the burden alone• Not talking about your stress or anxiety• Not including others in decision-making• Leaving people to fend for themselves. Why its damaging:It creates anxiety and uncertainty in others. Whenyou are missing in action, frustration builds andpeople fill in the blanks, spread rumors, andwithdraw their discretionary effort Making earth little softer
  6. 6. Going it aloneWhat to do: Talk with others about your tendencyto solve problems by yourself. Let others knowthat you are committed to working in partnershipbut you need their support. Ask them to point outwhen you are withdrawing so you can stopexcluding and start including. Making earth little softer
  7. 7. Insensitive to impactThe symptoms:• Not recognizing a negative impact• Being insensitive to cultural differences• Expecting others to react the same way you do• Criticizing and devaluing others• Dismissing reactions of others as their problemWhy its damaging: Insensitivity and a low levelof awareness results in an unsafe environment.People emotionally disengage, work around theleader, and do not speak up for fear ofrepercussions Making earth little softer
  8. 8. Insensitive to impactWhat to do: Find out how you impact others byasking for their candid feedback before you end aconversation. Ask following• Do you feel that I listen to you?• Do you believe that I have confidence in you?• Have I let you down in any way?• Have I said anything that is limiting our working relationship? Making earth little softer
  9. 9. An “I know” attitudeThe symptoms:• Having an answer for everything• Rigid and fixed views• Lack of intellectual curiosity• Not listening, diminishing what others to say• Arguing with those not agreeing with your• Refusing to explore alternatives and optionsWhy its damaging: Others feel devalued, angry, and insignificant. Innovation and creativity cometo a standstill as the "I know" leader dominatesconversations and shuts down new ideas Making earth little softer
  10. 10. An “I know” attitudeWhat to do: Recognize that your blind spotcauses you to miss important information andideas. Without fail, ask:• What have I missed?• What am I not seeing?• How am I limiting new possibilities? Making earth little softer
  11. 11. Avoiding difficult conversationThe symptoms:• Softening the message• Not delivering the tough message• Staying on the surface of issues• Avoiding emotional discussions• Talking in general instead of specificWhy its damaging: What you dont tell others, they will make up and discuss in the hallways.Leaders who are not direct raise anxiety levels tostaggering heights, resulting in a lack of focus onbusiness needs. People become more fixated onwhat the leader is not saying or disclosing Making earth little softer
  12. 12. Avoiding difficult conversationWhat to do: Start the conversation with a positivecontext and tell others that you are committed totheir success and to the partnership. Then ask ifthey are open to your coaching or feedback. Mostwill readily respond yes. Then say what you haveto say responsibly Making earth little softer
  13. 13. Blaming others or circumstancesThe symptoms: Always having a reason, excuse, or explanation ("Yeah, but…"); pointingthe finger at others; treating others as the enemyor opposition; building silos rather than supportingenterprise perspective; criticizing andcomplaining; invalidating ideas and people. Why its damaging: Leaders who blame othersare perceived as petty, small, and divisive. Theypolarize the organization and divide people intocamps. To avoid being caught in the line of fire, people stay below the radar and wait and seerather than take action. Making earth little softer
  14. 14. Blaming others or circumstancesWhat to do: Stop pointing out what others did notdo, what they should have done, and howineffective they are. Ask yourself:How has my behavior contributed to this problemor breakdown?Take accountability publicly by owning your role inthe problem. Fix yourself, not others Making earth little softer
  15. 15. Treating commitments casuallyThe symptoms: Not making commitments, notkeeping them, not delivering on time, alwaysmaintaining an escape hatch to avoid being heldaccountable, not providing a clear "I commit" or "Ido not commit," making casual promises with nointention of keeping them. Why its damaging: When people cannot trustyour word in all matters, they discount you, reduce your credibility, and imitate your behavior. The environment becomes lackluster with sloppypromises, accepting excuses over results, andnot holding each other accountable Making earth little softer
  16. 16. Treating commitments casuallyWhat to do: Be crystal clear about what you arecommitting to and what you are not committing to.If you must revoke a commitment, communicateprior to the promised deadline. Takeaccountability for your impact, and ask "Is there anew commitment I am willing to make?‖ Making earth little softer
  17. 17. Conspiring against othersThe symptoms: Making negative comments;silently endorsing a negative point of view by notspeaking up; displaying nonverbal cues ofdisapproval, disappointment, or disinterest;talking about people, not to them; enlisting othersas co-conspirators against a person or group. Why its damaging: When you conspire againstothers, you are perceived as dishonest, deceitful, and weak. People withdraw their trust andconstantly wonder what you are saying aboutthem. Your behavior erodes partnerships and youare unable to influence change or people Making earth little softer
  18. 18. Conspiring against othersWhat to do: Practice catching yourself when youmake negative comments about others. Themoment you notice yourself conspiring againstothers, stop and take accountability. Apologize foryour impact, restate what you have to say in asupportive manner, and immediately talk to theperson with whom you have an unresolved issue. Making earth little softer
  19. 19. Withholding emotional commitmentThe symptoms: Complying & going along with adecision, resisting change and withholdingsupport, withdrawing your passion andenthusiasm, agreeing intellectually but notcommitting emotionally, going through motionsWhy its damaging: Leaders who are nottransparent are viewed as disingenuous, disengaged, and inauthentic. When you withholdyour emotional commitment you separateyourself from others and they notice it. Yourbehavior slows or stops change. If you are notcommitted, why should they be? Making earth little softer
  20. 20. Withholding emotional commitmentWhat to do: When you are unable to fullycommit, communicate and share where you arestuck instead of letting your behavior do thetalking. Make a clear and direct request to theappropriate person for what you need in order tocommit intellectually and emotionally. Making earth little softer
  21. 21. Not taking a standThe symptoms:• Lack of clarity & direction on small / large issues• Not making decisions• Reversing decisions that you have made• High levels of ambiguity• Lack of decisive action, paralyzed teamsWhy its damaging: People lose confidence inleaders who wait for consensus, are slow to makedecisions, or are unwilling to take a clear anddecisive stand. Ineffectiveness results as othersspend their time trying to second-guess what youreally want Making earth little softer
  22. 22. Not taking a standWhat to do: Stop making others read your mindand be clear about what you want and what youare willing to commit to. You can always take astand—even when you have not made adecision—by saying, "I am not ready to make thisdecision today. But I will give you my answer bythe end of next week.― Making earth little softer
  23. 23. Tolerating good enoughThe symptoms: Failure to anticipate & embracechange, maintaining status quo or only makingincremental changes, defending why things arefine as they are, refusing to investigate solutionsthat are outside of your comfort zone, rejectingnew ideas, reacting instead of being proactive. Why its damaging: Others are discouraged andresigned when the leader does not demandexcellence in all areas. No one wants to besecond best; people want to be on the winningteam. Leaders lose support and enthusiasm aspeople resign to "nothing will ever change here.― Making earth little softer
  24. 24. Tolerating good enoughWhat to do: Examine what is holding you back:What are you tolerating and where are youresigned that this is as good as it gets? Raiseyour level of leadership awareness andeffectiveness and lead by example. This willinspire others to do the same. Making earth little softer
