Avoiding difficult conversationThe symptoms:• Softening the message• Not delivering the tough message• Staying on the surface of issues• Avoiding emotional discussions• Talking in general instead of specificWhy its damaging: What you dont tell others,they will make up and discuss in the hallways.Leaders who are not direct raise anxiety levels tostaggering heights, resulting in a lack of focus onbusiness needs. Blaming others or circumstancesThe symptoms: Always having a reason,excuse, or explanation ("Yeah, but…"); pointingthe finger at others; treating others as the enemyor opposition; building silos rather than supportingenterprise perspective; criticizing andcomplaining; invalidating ideas and people.Why its damaging: Leaders who blame othersare perceived as petty, small, and divisive. Treating commitments casuallyThe symptoms: Not making commitments, notkeeping them, not delivering on time, alwaysmaintaining an escape hatch to avoid being heldaccountable, not providing a clear "I commit" or "Ido not commit," making casual promises with nointention of keeping them.Why its damaging: When people cannot trustyour word in all matters, they discount you,reduce your credibility, and imitate your behavior.The environment becomes lackluster with sloppypromises, accepting excuses over results, andnot holding each other accountable Making earth little softer

Treating commitments casuallyWhat to do: Be crystal clear about what you arecommitting to and what you are not committing to.If you must revoke a commitment, communicateprior to the promised deadline. Conspiring against othersThe symptoms: Making negative comments;silently endorsing a negative point of view by notspeaking up; displaying nonverbal cues ofdisapproval, disappointment, or disinterest;talking about people, not to them; enlisting othersas co-conspirators against a person or group.Why its damaging: When you conspire againstothers, you are perceived as dishonest, deceitful,and weak. Themoment you notice yourself conspiring againstothers, stop and take accountability. Withholding emotional commitmentThe symptoms: Complying & going along with adecision, resisting change and withholdingsupport, withdrawing your passion andenthusiasm, agreeing intellectually but notcommitting emotionally, going through motionsWhy its damaging: Leaders who are nottransparent are viewed as disingenuous,disengaged, and inauthentic. When you withholdyour emotional commitment you separateyourself from others and they notice it. Yourbehavior slows or stops change. If you are notcommitted, why should they be? Not taking a standThe symptoms:• Lack of clarity & direction on small / large issues• Not making decisions• Reversing decisions that you have made• High levels of ambiguity• Lack of decisive action, paralyzed teamsWhy its damaging: People lose confidence inleaders who wait for consensus, are slow to makedecisions, or are unwilling to take a clear anddecisive stand. You can always take astand—even when you have not made adecision—by saying, "I am not ready to make thisdecision today.
