  1. 1. Preliminary Geologic Characterization for Carbon Sequestration in Central Appalachia SECARB Task 10 Update
  2. 2. Task 10 Objectives <ul><ul><li>Characterize potential large-volume test sites in Central Appalachia for coal seam sequestration and enhanced coalbed methane recovery. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Delineate and characterize saline aquifers in the region that could provide secondary carbon sequestration options. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Review and identify depleted or partially-depleted oil and gas fields that could support large-volume CO2 injection tests. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Identify options for stacked storage reservoirs in Central Appalachia. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Design test site operations, measurement, monitoring and verification program and site closure. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Select several test sites in Central Appalachia for a large-volume carbon sequestration coal seam project which could lead to commercial deployment. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Implement public outreach and education. </li></ul></ul>

  4. 4. Southwest Virginia dataset includes >4000 well logs, production data, 5-10 cores & surface outcrops

Current Progress <ul><ul><li>Defined study areas and began developing base maps for Bradshaw and Oakwood CBM Fields located in southwestern West Virginia and Virginia. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Process geophysical logs for CBM wells located in Bradshaw and Oakwood CBM Fields. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Correlate coal seams and develop stratigraphic cross sections in Bradshaw and Oakwood Fields. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Geologic data collection for regional CBM subsurface assessment continues, significant volume of subsurface geophysical logs for the Nora CBM field investigated, several continuous cores from Nora CBM field identified at Virginia Tech Department of Geosciences Core Archive </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Aquired two donated, continuous cores through the coal-bearing intervals from a wellsite in Wise and Russell Counties, Virginia. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Production data for all CBM and conventional wells in Virginia aquired from state office. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Analogous ECBM project literature of other Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships Programs reviewed </li></ul></ul>

Future Work <ul><li>Continue subsurface surveys of CBM and Conventional Gas fields </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Construct structural and stratigraphic models for several fields, esp. within the Nora Field </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Evaluate deeper strata for CO2 Sequestration Potential </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Integrate core data to characterize sealing capacity of rock units surrounding coal seams </li></ul><ul><li>Integrate production data to identify CBM well maturity ripe for CO2 enhancement </li></ul>
