The Pythagorean theorem states that in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. An example is provided to demonstrate calculating the length of one side of a right triangle using the Pythagorean theorem. The distance formula is introduced as a way to calculate the distance between two points on a coordinate plane by taking the difference of the x-coordinates and y-coordinates and using the Pythagorean theorem. An example calculation using the distance formula between two points is shown.
