The financial world was collapsing around our ears and I was hearing some really negative sentiment from friends, colleagues and customers all seeming to be getting ready for a fate worse than death. I disagreed, I thought it was a really good time to get of your arse and do something.

I wasn’t going to save the world but I could make a point. So literally I got off my somewhat fat arse, picked something I had always thought was impossible, and then thought about doing it.

I also picked riding a bike because this year was also very important for a very special person, my mum. She was turning 60 this year, and more impressively was to celebrate on new years 45 years in a wheelchair. If she could raise three sons solo, in a chair smiling and not give up then I could ride on a bike for 7 weeks, perhaps not the smiling bit.

The length of NZ may not have it in distance, but for me riding to the dairy was a mission. And to make it even harder I decided to do it bottom to top, so it would be uphill all the way.
(it’s amazing how many people thinks it makes a difference)

Reduce the risk of failing by actually training. I picked a 20 km vomit educing route I rode every couple of days. I made sure it was the hilliest meanest terrain.
I decided i would be ready when I could ride my bike, for hours up hills without vomiting and feel like I could get up the next day and do it all again.

So how do you make sure you actually complete it. Quite simply DO IT. You should at least once realise you are talking your self out of it. This is good, it means it is really hard. Fight back, fixate on that date you chose, by a plane ticket early on, but make sure you GO!
