Scion enjoy a popular following with people who like customising their car. They’ve have created a presence in Second Life in which the cars you can pick up there are customisable. If you design a really excellent flared wheel arch, or custom spoiler, they’ll consider building it in the real world and making it an official after-market accessory.3 years ago

The first time I watched a game of baseball was in Second Life. I could watch the video, or watch the little computer controlled versions of the players acting out the game in near real time. The best bit wasn’t the baseball but the crowd. Somewhere between watching it at home (a single-user experience) and watching it live at the stadium. Perhaps the closest analogy is watching it on a TV at the local pub, with a crowd of cheering people around you. Not the same as being there, but a very social experience.3 years ago

Sold to Disney this year for $700M
It’s a game, but the “point” is left pretty open. It’s a safe environment in which kids can keep pets, race down the ski runs, play ice hockey, or just hang around and chat. Very simple, quite fun (though I’m not really the target audience) and the ‘play’ is emergent, in that kids will find their own things to do and games to play. One of the screens has an iceberg, and there’s an urban legend that if all the players stand on the same end of the iceberg ir will tip over.3 years ago

A virtual world in which to meet people with whom you’ll play games. From the little I’ve seen of it so far, it’s very impressive (graphically, at least). Also interesting to see virtual worlds escaping the domain of the PC and begin appearing on games consoles.3 years ago

IET Mountbatten Lecture 2007 - Roo ReynoldsWhen you first start in EVE, you’re in a small, weak, fragile litle spaceship. To make you feel really bad about it, the default ship even has the word “rookie” as part of its name.
In order to get a bigger ship, you will either need to save up and buy one, or you might try to beg, borrow or steal one. I’m not joking about the steal either, in some parts of space, piracy is rife. Assassinations and espionage are all fair game, and all part of the fun.3 years ago

IET Mountbatten Lecture 2007 - Roo ReynoldsEventually, though mining running courrier runs for other people, I saved up enough to buy a frigate, a battlecruiser, and eventually a battleship. Here’s with a firend working together to kill a (pleasntly weak) computer controlled hostile enemy. We could, if we were so inclined, get into player-killer, and gang up on an actual person. If there happened to be a bounty on their head, we’d even get a reward. We’re nice though (and frightened of the well armed police force which patrols the safer areas of the universe), so we didn’t get into crime or piracy.3 years ago
