In remembrance of Martyrdom ofSri Guru Arjan Dev ji Fifth Guru of Sikhs (April 15, 1563 - May 30, 1606)
A man is not afraid of martyrdom when he isready to stand by the truth, die for his idealsand sacrifice his own self for the cause of the exploited and underprivileged.
Guru Arjan Sahib, the youngest sonof Guru Ramdas Sahib and MataBhani Ji was born at GoindwalSahib on April 15,1563. He learnt Gurmukhi script, Gurbani and was also given a suitable education in Persian, Hindi and Sanskrit languages.
He was hardly 18 yearsold when his father GuruRamdas Sahib installedhim as the Fifth Nanak(Fifth Guru)He was married to MataGanga ji and had a son(Guru) Hargobind Sahib(Sixth Guru)
He got the foundationstone of HarmandirSahib, laid by a MuslimSaint Hazrat Mian Mir Jiof Lahore in December1588.
He founded Tarn Taran Sahib in the Year 1590 and the digging ofthe tank (Sarovar) started. When the tank was completed it wasthe biggest and largest tank in the whole of Panjab
To solve the drinking water problems, he constructed a Baoli in Dabbi-Bazar of Lahore. (Once Shah Jahan destroyed the Baoli and erected amosque there. But later on Maharaja Ranjit Singh re-excavated the Baoli.Again, after the partition of India in 1947, it was demolished by theMusilm mob).
After collecting the hymnsof first four Guru Sahibs andseveral other Hindu andMuslim Saints, and compiledGuru Granth Sahib (writtenby Bhai Gurdas Ji).He himself contributed about 2000 verses for it, installed it at SriHarmandir Sahib in August/September 1604, and made BabaBudha Ji as the first Granthi.
Once the emperor Akbar was mislead about thecontents of Guru Granth Sahib by the enemies of GuruArjan Sahib. But finding nothing objectionable, theemperor Akbar assessed Guru Granth Sahib as"The greatest Granth of synthesis, worthy ofreverence".
Sri Guru Granth Sahib proved a great landmark in the history of Sikh Nation. Now the Sikhism began to develop as a different religion.Guru spread the Sikhism to the provinces far distant fromthe Punjab and attracted a large number of followers. The number of Sikhs began toincrease day by day and thismade the orthodox Hindusand princely Muslim classmore jealous towards GuruGhar (Sikh Nation).
After the death of Akbar in1605 both Hindu and Muslimfundamentalists move thenew head of state emperorJahangir against Guru Sahib.Jahangir himself was alsojealous about Guruspropagation of Sikhism. Hepromptly obliged theenemies of Guru Sahib.
Many baseless allegations wereleveled against Guru Sahib, oneof those was helping therebellious Khusro. Guru Arjan Sahib was arrestedand brought to Lahore wherehe was charge-sheeted andimplicated in the false cases.
The Governor of Lahore wasassigned the task of the execution. He handed over Guru Sahib over toChandu, a petty businessman andan orthodox Hindu of Lahore city.He tortured Guru Sahib aboutthree days in a manner unknown inthe history of mankind.
It is said that Mian Mir (a Muslim SufiSaint and friend of Guru Sahib) tried tointercede on behalf of Guru Sahib but thelater forbade him.
During the torturing period, Guru Sahib was made to sit onthe hot iron plates and burning sand was poured over hisnaked body. When his body was blistered, he was chainedand thrown into the river Ravi.
Guru Sahib embraced martyrdom on May 30,1606.Jahangir in his autobiography acknowledges that he personally ordered theexecution of Guru Arjan Sahib.
