    • Science and Communication
      • Science Communication (SC) is part of a global and integrated communication system
      web radio tv press/books
    • Science and Communication
      • So SC must be in gear with the (continously changing) character of the global communication system
      • Science and Technology change the media at our disposal and Communication tecniques innovate their use
    • Science and Communication
      • Communication is always a 2-way process.
      • You are always addressing another person...
    • Science and Communication
      • Even if you don’t see, know her/him
      • You must be aware of her/his reaction!
      • Even if face-to-face Communication is fading away
    • Communication: a 2-way process
      • Communication: most of it carried out by means of media and oriented by media.
    • Addressing a person in a media system
      • At its beginning writing
      • was about land goods
      • animals, commodities.
      • All the rest was orally transmitted.
        • Up to 20 years ago a split
        • between prive and public
        • communication, between
        • free and work time, life and work tools.
    • Addressing a person as a whole
      • Computer links, weara-
      • ble tools and public media...
      • the web as a universal
      • communication sphere,
      • from state laws to personal diaries.
    • Addressing a person as a whole
      • Everyone expects to be
      • addressed as a whole
      • body and soul, heart and mind.
    • Science Communication, of what ?
      • Not only of scientific
      • results, their social and
      • technical applications
      • Not only of sience institu-
      • tions and their role.
      • But also of scientific
      • culture, with its values.
      • And also of commitment
      • and feelings of scientists .
    • Science and Democracy
      • In the 18 th Century Scientific Academies were models for the new democratic institutions inspired by Free Communication Equality among scientists, Universal diffusion of scientific results
      • Fair estimate and recognition of other people’s work
    • Science Communication, why ?
      • Science offers cultural models. So it must be transmitted with all its limits, doubts and contradditions
    • Science Communication, why ?
      • Science offers models of behavior, so it must be presented by testing its reality vs ideology: e.g. the ro le of patents vs free communication of results ; scientists equality vs hierarchy; etc.
    • Science Communication, why ?
      • Because science understands nature not only by observation but also by creating an artificial world following the laws of nature.
    • Science Communication, why ? What is found today in labs will turn tomorrow into a medical aid, news of communication
    • Science, a Communication System
      • By an experiment a fact of nature enters the medium of knowledge and communication: ” Complete it, polish it, publish it ” (Farady)‏
      • Only by publication an experimental result or a theory enters in the realm of science.
      • Once in direct communication with nature, the scientist depends more and more upon available literature and scientific instruments.
    • Science, Culture and Technology
      • Technology transforms communication media, changes the way of perceive and elaborate reality and finally, changes Man and his culture
      • Technology: omnipotence and weakness
      • Communicate Science: to take back technology to its origins
    • Why communicate Science? B ecause...
      • ...there is no aspect of the human life that is not involved with and transformed by Science and Technology
    • Why communicate Science? B ecause...
      • ...nowadays each problem is at the same time scientific, technical, social, economic, aesthetic and moral
    • Why communicate Science? B ecause...
        • ...only an integrated culture is capable to talk about the Man
    • Thank you
