1. 1. Actualities and the British Documentary Film Movement Week 2
 2. 2. Actualities

Early films were by almost definition documentary films.

Either recorded the real or simulated events

Thomas Edison’s Fred OTT’s Sneeze was of a man simply sneezing to camera described as the documentary of the sneeze.

 3. 3. Lumiere Brothers

Called Workers leaving the Factory

Depict a real event, workers leaving at the end of their shift.

 4. 4. Are they real???

However the factory appears to be overdressed and a number of workers appear to be acting exuberantly for the camera!

Again either a replication of reality or a shaped managed reality

The manipulation of the real is lost beneath the replication of the new!

 5. 5.

Dominated by being a novelty or spectacle so no need to edit or change the event as audiences were happy nevertheless!

So simply recording the ‘real’ was the easiest option

Drama would emerge when events were recorded but when cameras were not at events they were reconstructed

TV would use this technique a lot.
