  2. 2. <ul><ul><li>One goal of the No Child Left Behind legislation is that all students will be proficient in the use of technology. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The US Department of Education states in the Partnership for 21 st Century Skills that student proficiency means using the appropriate technology tools and applying them to various tasks within the classroom. </li></ul></ul>

Why Laptops for Seniors and Juniors? <ul><ul><li>Increase student engagement, motivation, and self-directed learning. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Improve school to home communication. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Improve the quality of student learning and academic achievement as they develop 21 st Century skills. </li></ul></ul>

Why Laptops for Seniors and Juniors? <ul><ul><li>Provide greater access to educational opportunities, formative assessments, and differentiated instruction by providing one to one 24/7 access to laptops. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Equip students to become lifelong learners. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Prepare students for a 21 st Century job market. </li></ul></ul>

Issuing Laptops <ul><ul><li>All students registering for eleventh and twelfth grade and all students at Wilkes Early College High School will be issued a laptop after a parent meeting is conducted and proper parent and student signatures are provided. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The laptop will be assigned in the same manner as a textbook. </li></ul></ul>

  7. 7. Issuing Laptops <ul><ul><li>The serial number of the laptop will be recorded. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Once the laptop is issued to a student, it will stay with the student for the remainder of the school year, or until the student withdraws from school. </li></ul></ul>

Issuing Laptops <ul><ul><li>Students will be reassigned their original laptop each year while enrolled in Wilkes County Schools. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Students are responsible for bringing the laptops to school, taking them home each day, and charging them for use the next day. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The laptops are not to be left unsupervised at school or at home in unsecured locations. </li></ul></ul>

Issuing Laptops <ul><ul><li>Wilkes County Schools will loan a laptop to all eleventh and twelfth graders and all Early College High School students upon compliance with the following: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Parent Orientation </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A Laptop Agreement signed by the student and parent </li></ul></ul></ul>

Laptop Responsibility <ul><ul><li>It is the responsibility of the students to care for the laptop and all other equipment in the manner outlined in the High School Laptop Handbook. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Misuse or abuse of the laptop and other equipment will result in lose of laptop use and/or financial restitution. </li></ul></ul>

Laptop Responsibility <ul><ul><li>Parents and students should read and understand the Laptop Handbook before signing. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Students and parents should understand that the equipment is the property of WCS and is on loan to their child. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Students will responsible for proper care and use of the laptop. </li></ul></ul>
  12. 12. Laptop FAQ <ul><ul><li>Q. How many laptops were lost last year. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>A. No laptops or netbooks were lost. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Q. How many laptops were damaged last year. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>A. Out of almost 540 laptops that were assigned to high school students, approximately 20 were damage accidentally or due to neglect, that’s about 4%. This means 96% of the high school laptops were returned in good condition. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Q. Is there a charge for the laptops? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>A. No, parents/students will only pay an insurance deductible in the event of damage. </li></ul></ul>
  13. 13. Gratitude We greatly appreciate your support as we work to provide your child with the tools to compete globally!   We also would like to thank The Golden Leaf Foundation for providing funds to purchase these laptops.
  14. 14. Students Golden Leaf Foundation donated the money for the laptops and will be auditing their use. You will be asked to complete surveys and there will be times when the laptops will be checked.

Students <ul><li>Things to know and keep in mind! </li></ul><ul><li>The laptop is assigned to you, but remains property of Wilkes County Schools. </li></ul><ul><li>Do not place stickers on it, write on it, or mark it in anyway. </li></ul><ul><li>Music – not downloaded and saved. </li></ul><ul><li>No gaming </li></ul><ul><li>No downloading/installing of any other software </li></ul><ul><li>The laptop is for EDUCATIONAL use. </li></ul>
  16. 16. Students <ul><li>Things to know and keep in mind! </li></ul><ul><li>Charge your computer every night. </li></ul><ul><li>Login ONLY on the computer assigned to you. </li></ul><ul><li>Do not change settings including the background </li></ul>

Students <ul><li>Things to know and keep in mind! </li></ul><ul><li>Do not remove it from its case </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t walk around with your laptop open </li></ul><ul><li>Remove your flash drive before walking around with your laptop. </li></ul><ul><li>Shutdown before you leave the school or else your laptop will overheat and will be damaged. </li></ul>

Students <ul><li>Things to know and keep in mind! </li></ul><ul><li>The laptop will get Internet at school through the wireless network. </li></ul><ul><li>You may plug a network cable into the laptop or use a home wireless network if you have Internet access at home. </li></ul><ul><li>Wilkes County Schools will be distributing approximately 3,000 laptops this year. We cannot be responsible for home Internet issues. </li></ul>
